06/25/2019

According to CECP’s report, employee engagement needs to be redesigned to cater to a more fulfilling and meaningful experience for the employee.

Dailycsr.com – 25 June 25, 2019 – A new report, “Making work more meaningful: Building a fulfilling employee experience”, revealed that there is a need for a “new standard” so as to provide the employees a “higher meaning” and fulfilling experience at work. The said report has been published by “CECP: The CEO Force for Good, Imperative, and PwC, the early days of a ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’”.

Almost 96% of the employees surveyed believed that it is possible to have fulfilment experience at work, while 80% showed their willingness to carry on the quest for “own path” to fulfilment and another 45% thought “themselves as a major barrier” to attain fulfilment.

The research surveyed “seven out of ten employees”, whereby further revealing that “they’d consider leaving their current role for a new, more fulfilling job opportunity, with one-third willing to consider lower pay for it”.

Though this study an attempt has been made to revisit the “existing paradigm and corporate assumptions” regarding employee experience which had been “top-down approach to employee engagement”. Work was defining yard stick for fulfilment which was described as “a feeling we have when we are working in alignment with our intrinsic motivations and gain a sense of purpose”. However, the authors of the new research report noted that currently the employee expectations are shifting towards “more human, personal workplace” amid the booming digitisation.

In the words of the principal, chief purpose office as well as the responsible business leader at PwC along with the “President of the PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc.”, Shannon Schuyler:
“Leaders need to focus on humanizing work in the digital age so individuals can flourish. New technologies such as artificial intelligence and automation will change how we all work, while fulfillment--the ability to feel a personal sense of purpose and meaning--will set a new standard for why we work.”

Corporate leaders wanting to support their employees in their search for “meaning in their jobs” could give importance to: “Relationships, Impact, and Growth”. As per the study, these are “three core elements” that forms an experience thus generating “the neurochemicals” which gives an individual the feeling of “fulfilled in their work”.

The Chief Executive Officer at Imperative, Aaron Hurst said:
“In the last decade, we’ve seen a shift in what defines success at work. Employees are demanding a more human workplace.  In order to compete for talent, organizations must respond with a new employee value proposition, one rooted in individual fulfillment.”

The leaders can either strengthen or become a hurdle in employees’ experience towards “greater meaning and fulfilment” at work. In the words of the chief executive of CECP, Daryl Brewster:
“As a coalition of CEOs, we see how the executives of some of the world’s leading companies are adapting to the needs of the changing consumer marketplace. The insights in this report demonstrate the power of purpose—a remarkable opportunity for business leaders to enhance their culture to meet the demands of today’s talent. Purpose can help employees find deeper meaning and drive superior performance in the daily work.  Purpose can help align a company to advance its goals.”
