Suzanne Rathbun: Transitioning Careers to Lead Commercial Real Estate Loan Administration at U.S. Bank
Suzanne Rathbun originally pursued a path in criminal justice and forensic science, aiming to become a prosecutor. However, the 2007-2008 financial crisis prompted her to change course. While completing her undergraduate degree during this tumultuous period, Rathbun gained practical experience in a law firm's commercial real estate and financial practices group. This exposure intrigued her, leading her to switch gears and pursue a degree in finance, a decision she considers one of her best.

With her finance degree in hand, Rathbun embarked on a career in banking, specializing in various loan administration roles within commercial real estate and other commercial lending sectors. Joining U.S. Bank in 2021 as the national head of Commercial Real Estate Loan Administration, Rathbun now oversees teams responsible for managing the entire lifecycle of loans, from inception to ongoing administration and compliance.

In her leadership role, Rathbun emphasizes the importance of understanding the intricacies of commercial real estate processes and maintaining adherence to disciplined credit and risk management practices. She and her teams provide comprehensive support to both internal stakeholders and external clients, ensuring that the bank's standards are upheld throughout the loan process.

Rathbun's passion for the industry extends beyond her professional responsibilities. She actively participates in industry groups and mentors individuals within the bank and through external programs like the University of Richmond’s Women in Leadership Certificate Program. Additionally, Rathbun finds fulfillment in witnessing the tangible impact of commercial real estate projects, recognizing their potential to stimulate economic growth and enhance communities.
