Rayonier’s commitment to safety earns Safety Stars
Actively pursuing "Safety as a Way of Life" is one of Rayonier's core values, not only for our own employees, but also for the hundreds of small, locally owned businesses with whom we work every day.

A monthly recognition called the Safety Star is one way we recognize the great work our colleagues are doing to make the workplace safer. This program recognizes contractors who contribute to improving their company's safety culture.

The Rayonier team recently recognized three recent honorees:
Dillon Stratton, 3D Trucking, Lake City, FL

Dillon was honored for the innovative camera and driver alert system he employs on his company's log trucks.

“It costs more money to do the right thing, but we take care of our equipment because our employees are like family,” he says. “Some of them have been with me for more than 20 years. You can replace or fix a tractor that’s been in an accident. You can’t replace someone’s life.”

Each of Dillon's trucks has a camera that looks out the windscreen and one that looks back down each side of the truck. This protects his truckers in the event of an accident. The system records issues such as hard braking and speeding, which Dillon uses to coach his employees on safe driving techniques. He motivates his drivers to participate in Team Safe Trucking by providing a financial incentive for each class they complete. (Team Safe Trucking is a logging-specific online driver training program.)

Dave Dilley, Dilley and Soloman, Forks, WA
Dave was nominated for his ongoing efforts to invest in newer, safer logging technology for his company, Dilley & Soloman Logging Co., which was founded in 1987.

Dave spent ten years running his uncle's small logging business before founding Dilley & Soloman. Some of Dave's employees have been with him since the beginning, making them feel more like family than coworkers.

“A lot of our people have been with us for a long time. I want all of our employees to go home at night and be in one piece,” said Dave.

He began investing in new logging technology about six years ago. (You can see him demonstrating winch-assisted logging in our video here.) He was hesitant at first, but after attending a steep slope logging conference, he says his eyes were opened and he completely bought in. Since then, he has continued to add new technology and make other changes, such as hiring a safety officer, to improve his company's safety.

Kim Nettles, True2Shine, Wildlight, FL
Kim, who works for True2Shine, is the Day Porter for Rayonier's Wildlight office and is always on hand to clean up a spill or remove boxes and trash to keep walkways safe. She not only keeps things clean, but she also keeps the janitorial safety data sheets (SDS) up to date, organizes the safety closet, and goes above and beyond. She is always willing to assist in team-lifting heavy packages and packing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) shipments for Rayonier offices across the United States.

Kim enjoys working in the office and is committed to doing everything she can to keep people safe. A coworker was injured when the worksite at a previous job was not properly maintained, and Kim saw firsthand how keeping things clean and organized is critical for helping everyone stay safe.

“My job is easier when I do it in a safe manner—and when everyone else does their job in a safe manner.”

We are proud of each of our Safety Star recipients for their initiative and leadership. We also recognize Rayonier employees for their safety efforts each month through an internal Safety Star program, which we highlight on social media from time to time.

That is just one aspect of Rayonier's efforts to create a safer workplace, not only in our forests, but throughout our industry. In addition, we have a safety app that allows users to look up industry safety guidelines for equipment and materials while they are working. They can also report near-miss incidents, which can be used to educate their peers. In addition, Rayonier hosted safety training seminars for over 650 contractors across the United States in 2022.
