Superior Essex’s Hoisington, Kansas, manufacturing facility receives Zero Waste to Landfill certificate

07/08/2015

A Zero Waste to Landfill Certificate has been awarded to Superior Essex’s data cable manufacturing facility at Hoisington, Kansas.

Superior Essex was proud to announce that it has received a Zero Waste to Landfill certification for its data cable manufacturing facility located at Hoisington Kansas. What is incredible is not just the fact that it has streamlined and curtailed wastage from its manufacturing process, but more importantly it the first ever company to have received a Zero Waste to Landfill certification for a communication cable manufacturing company. Also of note is the fact that not too many companies have received the Zero Waste to Landfill certification. It received the certificate from GreenCircle Certified LLC, an established well-known third party certifier for environmental claims.

A Zero Waste to Landfill certificate is a recognition of the company’s achievements towards its sensitivity to the environment and the zero diversion of materials to the landfill in its manufacturing process. The diversion of waste to landfills can be defined as the “prevention and reduction of generated waste through source reduction, recycling, reuse, or composting”. It is considered and recognized as one of the best ways manufacturing companies can demonstratively showcase their genuine, heartfelt environmental responsibilities.

In 2014, Superior Essex had achieved a 91 percent landfill waste diversion rate. Its new announcement marks an improvement over its previous record and goes to show the pains the company has taken to further streamline, reduce and recycle materials during its manufacturing process. Superior Essex has informed that its Hoisington facility will internally continue to reuse and recycle materials, and onlysend around 2 percent of its materials to a Waste to Energy facility.

“This achievement is the result of many years spent devising new ways to continuously reduce waste, and a testament to the dedication and hard work our Hoisington plant employees exhibited in reducing our environmental footprint,” said Tony Szot, Superior Essex Hoisington facility’s Plant Manager.“Through these continued efforts we have kept tens of millions of pounds of waste from reaching landfills.”

Tim Waldner, the President of Superior Essex’s Communications Division, chipped in saying, “Zero waste certification of our Kansas data cable production facility is just the latest among several environmental firsts for Superior Essex. It is our goal to be the industry leader in environmental sustainability, which gives us a responsibility to achieve performance levels that are not merely incremental, but are groundbreaking. I hope that our actions inspire the rest of the cabling industry to make sustainability improvements which are significant in terms of both scope and materiality.”
