TriplePundit Marks 20 Years of Leading Corporate Sustainability Journalism
TriplePundit, the media arm of 3BL, is marking its 20th anniversary as a sustainability newsroom with a new multimedia initiative that reflects on how the corporate sustainability landscape has evolved — and where it’s headed next.

3BL’s purchase of TriplePundit (3p) in 2017 was a defining point in its effort to partner with leading thinkers in socially responsible business. Since then, TriplePundit has played a key role in shaping 3BL’s trajectory, and we’re proud to champion their work as they celebrate two decades of impact and prepare for the future.

TriplePundit began shortly after the “triple bottom line” concept first emerged. Launched by MBA students at the Presidio School of Management in San Francisco — the first accredited business program to prioritize sustainability — the site was started by Nick Aster after working in media architecture at Mother Jones and Treehugger. Inspired by what he was learning, he gathered several classmates to contribute to a platform they described as “critical optimism,” one intended to explore the evolution of sustainable business models, brands, and workplace cultures.

Within just a few years, TriplePundit became one of the most widely read publications on responsible business, attracting more than 100,000 monthly readers and cultivating an active community of professionals, advocates, and lifelong learners. Reflecting its commitment to its readership, the publication shifted toward solutions-focused reporting in 2023 — highlighting overlooked stories of individuals and organizations achieving tangible progress on complex global issues.

Throughout its history, 3p’s journalists have reported on many of the field’s most influential moments, from groundbreaking corporate commitments like Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan and Marks & Spencer’s Plan A, to international milestones such as the Paris Climate Agreement and the U.N. Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

“As someone who joined a few years before TriplePundit’s 10th anniversary, reaching our 20-year milestone is personally meaningful,” executive editor Mary Mazzoni reflected on the site this month. “But the era we’re in — and the questions surrounding the real-world outcomes of corporate sustainability — give this moment a different weight. In some areas, progress has been significant; in others, far less so.”

The campaign The Long View: 20 Years of Sustainability in Motion revisits the defining events, technological advances, and transformative ideas that have shaped the sustainability movement in business. Seasoned journalists assess what has worked and what hasn’t, while leaders, thinkers, and advocates offer their insights and expectations for what comes next. A companion social media campaign brings these stories to life through striking visuals and encourages the broader community to join the conversation.
