Career Journey & Leadership Insights from a GoDaddy Engineer

08/27/2025

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your career journey so far.
At the beginning of my career, I stepped into investment banking, where my focus was on developing low-latency trading systems for institutional clients. I started out at RBS, which later became NatWest, and gained valuable hands-on experience in building large-scale, data-driven platforms that demanded both accuracy and performance.

Around three years ago, I transitioned to GoDaddy, and it’s been a rewarding journey ever since. I currently work in the Pricing team, where I had the opportunity to design and launch our new Discounting system from the ground up. My role spans everything from building promotion logic to integrating it seamlessly with broader pricing services. Alongside the technical work, I also lead a team of four engineers, balancing coding with coaching and mentorship.

What have you learned about yourself through the projects you’ve worked on?
Early in my career, working with mission-critical systems taught me the value of building for scalability and dependability. I developed a mindset for breaking down complex problems into manageable solutions while keeping long-term stability in mind.

At GoDaddy, I’ve come to appreciate the human side of engineering just as much. Effective collaboration, clear communication, and aligning goals across the team have shown me that technology alone isn’t enough—it’s the people behind it who truly make the difference.

What technical skills have been most important in your growth as an engineer and leader?
Problem-solving has always been central to my journey. Looking at challenges from multiple perspectives, asking the right questions, and considering edge cases have all helped me build stronger, more resilient systems.

As a leader, I’ve learned that impact multiplies when you empower your team. For me, leadership is about trust, guidance when needed, and creating an environment where people feel supported to learn, grow, and take ownership of their work.

What resources would you recommend for aspiring tech leads?
A few that I’ve found especially valuable include:
  • Designing Data-Intensive Applications by Martin Kleppmann
  • Foundations of Scalable Systems by Ian Gorton (O’Reilly)
  • How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie — a classic that taught me a lot about working effectively with people

What makes GoDaddy an exciting place for engineers?
GoDaddy constantly challenges you in ways that help you grow. You’re encouraged to step outside your comfort zone and tackle meaningful engineering problems that make a real impact.

The learning culture is another standout aspect. With initiatives like GoLearn—offering internal courses, workshops, and certifications—there’s always an opportunity to upskill. Personally, I’ve been able to explore new tech stacks, experiment with serverless designs, and rethink scalability approaches, all of which have enriched my growth as an engineer.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
In my spare time, I enjoy reading and finding new ways to continue learning—there’s always something new to discover. At home, I love spending time with Leo, our energetic husky, who keeps me busy with long walks and adventures.

Most of all, I cherish being a dad to my six-year-old son. We spend a lot of time on fun and educational activities together—whether it’s DIY projects, games, or anything that sparks his curiosity.
