Women Engineers Powering the Future at Entergy Texas

Women Engineers Powering the Future at Entergy Texas
At Entergy Texas, women engineers are playing a vital role in energizing communities, reinforcing the electric grid, and building a more resilient energy future. Whether they are developing systems or leading high-impact projects, these engineers are making significant contributions to the energy sector.

However, women remain underrepresented in technical fields. According to a 2024 report by the U.S. Department of Labor, women make up just 26% of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) workforce in the U.S. This gender disparity is one reason why International Women in Engineering Day, observed annually on June 23, exists — to honor the achievements of women engineers and inspire more girls and women to pursue STEM careers.

Entergy Texas proudly celebrates the accomplishments of several exceptional women who are pushing boundaries and paving the way for future generations.

Abby Childress
Project Manager, Distribution Reliability
Abby Childress didn’t always plan to become an engineer. Just two weeks into her freshman year at Louisiana State University, she changed her major from nutrition to mechanical engineering and never looked back.

“I realized engineering aligned with my strengths in math and physics,” she said.

Now, with six years of experience, Abby oversees projects that improve system reliability for customers throughout Southeast Texas. Her path reflects her tenacity and self-belief.

“Engineering is challenging—and that’s what makes it fulfilling,” she shared. “The difficulties you face are often a measure of the confidence you carry.”

Her advice for aspiring women in STEM?

“Your perspective matters. Be confident in your knowledge and who you are. It’s a journey you’ll always be proud of.”

Ana Garcia
Supervisor, Distribution Design and Engineering
Ana Garcia always knew she was destined for a career in STEM. She earned her engineering degree at the University of Texas at El Paso and hasn’t looked back since.

“What kept me motivated was the constant variety in my work—it made the job exciting,” she said.

As a student, Ana noticed the gender imbalance in her classes and felt compelled to help shift the narrative.

“There were very few women—maybe a 90-to-10 ratio,” she recalled.

Now, she leads a team working on key infrastructure projects and finds deep satisfaction in the tangible impact her work has on communities.

“We’re doing truly technical and transformative work,” Ana said. “What we do really does make a difference.”

Oluwatobiloba Johnson
Engineer, Distribution Operations Center
With strong support from her family, Oluwatobiloba Johnson discovered her passion for engineering through a love for problem-solving and learning.

“My brother and cousins always encouraged me. They saw my strengths in math and science and believed in me.”

Five years into her career, she plays a crucial role in maintaining electric reliability in Southeast Texas, all while continuing to learn from her peers.

“Stay open to learning—from everyone. Even those walking the same path as you have something to teach.”

Her message to young women exploring engineering is one of resilience and inner strength.
“Push your limits when needed. Engineering doesn’t rely on physical strength—it requires mental toughness.”

Shaping Tomorrow, Together
From university classrooms to power system control centers, women like Abby, Ana, and Oluwatobiloba are redefining the future of energy. Their stories reflect Entergy Texas' dedication to creating a more diverse and dynamic engineering workforce—and to inspiring future innovators in the field.
