While Comcast has continued to invest in nation-wide digital transformation, virtual and cloud-based technologies in order to deliver faster broadband speeds, with increased reliability and improved energy efficiency, its new virtualized platform includes centralized locations for data centers and hubs, with a focus on increasing the energy efficiency compared to legacy technologies, which as a result require not only reduced space but less hardware and offer reduced energy per byte.

"We're moving toward a greener Internet," said Charlie Herrin, president of Comcast's Cable Technology, Products and Experiences organization.

The company’s goal is to remain neutral in Zone 1 and Zone 2 emissions, (read as direct and indirect emissions that it owns and can thus control) by 2035. Since purchased electricity accounts for its single largest share of its emissions, Comcast has decided to invest in renewable clean energy which will power its networks and operations. As a result, it will transition to newer, more energy-efficient technologies which will transmit less energy per byte.

"Our company needs to work harder and smarter to achieve our goal of being carbon neutral, and that includes the grid," said Herrin.

In order to celebrate the company's commitment to the environment, Comcast has purchased and donated a renewable energy certificate to power SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2022 with 100% clean energy.
