U.S. News & World Report, a leading source for rankings and consumer guidance, has unveiled its inaugural 2026 Best Adventure Vehicles awards, honoring vehicles designed for outdoor travel, off-road performance, camping and long-distance journeys. The new awards recognize standout models in four key categories: Best Vehicles for Camping, Best Vehicles for Road Trips, Best SUVs for Off-Roading and Best Trucks for Off-Roading.
The selections were determined using category-focused evaluation criteria that considered off-road capability, interior space, passenger comfort, fuel efficiency, available adventure-oriented technology and overall vehicle quality.
“Adventure looks different for every driver, whether they’re exploring rugged trails, camping outdoors or setting off on cross-country drives,” said John Vincent, senior editor of vehicle testing at U.S. News. “These new awards are intended to guide consumers toward vehicles that combine excitement and capability with practicality for everyday travel.”
The off-road categories featured several iconic names, including the Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender and Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro. At the same time, some lesser-known contenders also earned recognition, such as the Nissan Armada PRO-4X and the newly redesigned Toyota RAV4 Woodland.
GMC emerged as one of the strongest performers in the camping and road-trip segments, collecting four category wins. Models such as the GMC Acadia, GMC Sierra EV and GMC Yukon XL were praised for their roomy interiors and comfort-oriented amenities. Ford also performed strongly in the off-road categories, earning three awards with vehicles including the Ford Bronco Sport Sasquatch and Ford Bronco, both recognized for their rugged capabilities. The Ford F-150 received honors in both camping and off-roading thanks to the Raptor and Tremor trims, along with the available Pro Power Onboard system that can supply electricity to campsites and trailers for extended periods.
Electrified vehicles also made a significant impact across several categories, highlighting increasing demand for adventure-ready hybrid and electric models.
Rivian claimed top honors in the electric off-road truck and SUV categories with the R1T and R1S. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Ioniq 9 was named Best Electric SUV for both camping and road trips due to its spacious cabin and premium features.
Among smaller vehicles, the Kia Niro earned recognition as the Best Subcompact Hybrid SUV for Road-Tripping thanks to its fuel efficiency of up to 53 mpg combined. The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid was selected as the Best Subcompact Hybrid SUV for Camping for blending efficiency, off-road capability and camping-friendly practicality.
