Turo: The First Carbon-Neutral Car Sharing Marketplace

08/29/2023

Turo, the world’s leading peer-to-peer car sharing platform, recognized the need to address its environmental impact. As part of its mission to make better use of the world’s 1.5 billion cars, Turo also aimed to ensure that existing resources were used more efficiently. In 2021, the company committed to offsetting all of its estimated global carbon emissions, based on the total number of miles driven on Turo trips and emissions from its global offices. To better understand its carbon footprint and work towards a more sustainable transportation industry, Turo partnered with SCS Global Services.

To achieve its sustainability goals and align with its brand values, Turo worked with SCS Global Services to identify and validate carbon offset projects. As part of its carbon-neutral certification, Turo invested in the J.B. Hunt Transportation Efficiency Project, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from goods transportation by 50%, and the Kootznoowoo Forestry Project, which will protect 20,000 acres of forest on Prince of Wales Island in Alaska, including 8,000 acres of old-growth forest.

Turo will also continue to expand its electric vehicle initiatives as part of the ongoing carbon reduction requirements of SCS’s carbon-neutral certification. This includes increasing the availability of electric and hybrid vehicles on the platform and encouraging guests to choose these vehicles for their trips. In 2022, approximately 14% of Turo’s Gross Booking Value came from trips taken in vehicles powered by alternative energy.

"I’m proud of the steps we — our employees and vibrant community of hosts and guests — have collectively taken to reduce our environmental footprint while enjoying all that Turo has to offer. In addition to being carbon neutral certified by SCS Global Services, Turo has offered access to a wide selection of electric vehicles since 2012, helping drive the adoption of EVs, and has some of the most sought after and recently launched makes and models available to book today. We expect EV adoption to increase, and will continue to champion this growth by building a rich supply of electric and hybrid vehicles on the platform”,. said Andre Haddad, CEO, Turo

On April 18, 2023, Turo achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first peer-to-peer car sharing platform in the world to receive carbon-neutral certification. This accomplishment is a reflection of Turo’s unwavering commitment to combating climate change.

As a result of its efforts, Turo has gained a comprehensive understanding of its carbon footprint and the emissions that contribute to it. The company has also acquired a deeper knowledge of the various types and sources of data used to calculate an accurate corporate footprint. Turo has improved its programs to support hosts in purchasing and listing electric vehicles on its platform and has formed new partnerships in the electric vehicle space to drive more EV trips. Additionally, Turo is working on enhancing its user experience by making product changes that elevate its EV offerings.
