Home Depot surges ahead with 100MW renewable energy solar project

12/04/2022

The Home Depot announced that 100 MW of solar energy purchased from National Grid Renewables for its Noble solar and storage project in Denton County, Texas will generate nearly 8% of The Home Depot's total electricity usage. National Grid Renewables' largest solar energy project to date, as well as its first utility-scale energy storage project, is the solar farm.

The Home Depot has pledged to produce or procure 100% renewable electricity equivalent to all Home Depot facilities' electricity needs by 2030, expanding on the company's previous commitment to produce or procure 335 megawatts of renewable or alternative energy by 2025.

"Solar energy is the most abundant energy resource on the planet," said Ron Jarvis, The Home Depot's chief sustainability officer. "With this purchase, we are one step closer to our goal of producing or procuring 100% renewable electricity equivalent to our facilities' needs." By the end of 2023, we expect solar energy to account for roughly three-quarters of our alternative and renewable energy capacity."

Noble is a 275 MW solar and 125 MWh energy storage project located in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. During operation, Noble is expected to save 450,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide.

The Home Depot is reducing its carbon footprint by improving operational efficiency and investing in alternative energy solutions. Since 2010, The Home Depot has cut its electricity consumption in its US stores by half, and it now operates rooftop solar farms on more than 80 stores and electricity-generating fuel cells in more than 200.

The Home Depot currently buys solar energy from a 75 MW facility and has a contract for an additional 50 MW of solar capacity. The company also buys energy from a 50 MW wind farm. The combined annual renewable energy generation from these agreements is expected to power more than 500 stores, according to Home Depot.
