Baker Hughes Awarded Contract for First Fully Electric LNG Project in Middle East by ADNOC Gas
ADNOC Gas, acting on behalf of ADNOC, has awarded a contract to the energy technology firm, Baker Hughes, to supply two electric liquefaction systems (e-LNG) for the Ruwais LNG project in the UAE. The announcement was made at ADIPEC, a major global energy event, and the contract is set to be finalized in the last quarter of 2023.
The LNG trains for the project will utilize Baker Hughes’ 75 megawatt BRUSH electric motor technology and advanced compressor technology, making the Ruwais LNG project one of the first fully electric LNG projects in the Middle East. The trains are projected to have a total production capacity of 9.6 million tons per year.
The Ruwais LNG expansion project is part of ADNOC’s plan to more than double its LNG production capacity in response to growing global demand for natural gas. The Ruwais facility, which will be powered by electricity, is set to become one of the world’s lowest carbon intensity LNG facilities.

Baker Hughes’ gas technology equipment portfolio has seen a surge in demand in 2023, with the company securing several significant LNG orders. This follows the acquisition of the Power Generation division of the BRUSH group by Baker Hughes in 2022, a move that bolstered its industrial electric machinery offerings and underscored its strategic commitment to delivering lower carbon solutions. Since the acquisition, the company has won several contracts, including one from Wison in the first quarter of 2023 for the supply of four e-LNG compressor trains for an onshore LNG facility in sub-Saharan Africa.
