Advancing Climate Research with Energy-Efficient LUMI Supercomputer Powered by AMD Technology
Ranked seventh on the Green500 List in June 2023, one of the most energy-efficient supercomputers globally utilizes AMD technology and contributes to advancing climate research. Hailed as the recipient of the prestigious Best Sustainability Innovation in HPC award at the 2021 HPC Wire Readers' and Editors' choice awards, the remarkable LUMI supercomputer in Finland exemplifies unparalleled environmental sustainability.

Powered by AMD's 3rd Gen EPYC™ CPUs and AMD MI250 Instinct™ GPUs, it operates entirely on renewable energy, benefiting from an impressive capacity of up to 200 megawatts. Leveraging year-round free cooling, LUMI's waste heat alone generates approximately 20 percent of the district's heat, resulting in an estimated reduction of the city's carbon emissions by 12,400 metric tons annually.

Beyond its environmental advantages, LUMI serves as a vital tool for tackling pressing climate-related challenges worldwide. Within the framework of the European Green Deal and European Digital Strategy, this supercomputer plays a crucial role in the Destination Earth project (DestinE), funded by the EU's Digital Europe Program. Its primary focus lies in climate modeling, with the ultimate goal of constructing a comprehensive digital replica of our planet, commonly referred to as a "digital twin," to deepen our understanding of climate change and its repercussions.

This endeavor encompasses the analysis of various environmental processes and systems, enabling researchers to establish intricate connections between different models and gain insights into complex phenomena like floods and hurricanes.
