Hormel Foods’ Award-Winning Sustainability Efforts: 100% Renewable Electricity and Reduced Emissions

10/11/2023

Hormel Foods Corporation, a global food company listed in the Fortune 500 and recognized for its dedication to sustainability, recently received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its goals to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The company has pledged to decrease its total GHG emissions from its operations by 50% by 2030, using 2019 as the base year. Additionally, Hormel Foods has made a commitment to lower absolute GHG emissions within its supply chain by 27.5% within the same period.

These ambitious goals set by the company align with the path outlined in the Paris Climate Agreement, which aims to prevent average temperatures from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

“We are proud to announce these ambitious targets to help fight climate change,” said Tom Raymond, director of environmental sustainability at Hormel Foods.

“It is going to require all team members, partners and supply-chain members to reach these goals and continue to decarbonize every part of our value chain.”

The company has already implemented a range of strategies to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, which include efforts to enhance energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption. In 2022, Hormel Foods boosted its acquisition of domestic renewable electricity from less than 10% to a full 100% through Power-Purchase Agreements, generating over 936 million kWh hours during that year. The company’s initiatives have been recognized with awards from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Center for Resource Solutions.

Furthermore, Hormel Foods was honored with a Sustainability Excellence in Manufacturing Award from ProFood World for its successful efforts in reducing water and energy consumption at its advanced processing plant.
