Marina Bay Sands & WWF Partner To Promote Ocean & Seafood Conservation

07/26/2018

With WWF’s partnership, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore strides to source seafood served within the property from “sustainable stock”.

Dailycsr.com – 26 July 2018 – Marina Bay Sands has entered into a partnership with the “World Wide Fund for Nature”, in short WWF, in Singapore. This partnership has been formed with the aim of raising the “sustainability standards within Asia’s hospitality industry”.

Both the organisations have fixed their focus on the conservation of oceans and seafood, whereby setting the goals of “responsible seafood, aquaculture improvement projects (AIPs), and enhanced green meeting packages”.

89% of global farming of seafood takes place in Asia alone while Singapore’s “seafood consumption” exceeds the “global average”. In order to meet the demand the potential impact could result in overfishing. Now Marina Bay Sands’ menu does not feature any seafood which are mentioned in the “WWF’s Seafood Guide”. Moving in this line, the property has also decided to “remove the popular red grouper and bluefin dishes from its menus”.

Under the above mentioned collaboration, the resort will also support “four aquaculture farms in Malaysia” to adopt “sustainable farming”. There is a plan of sourcing 70% of Marina Bay Sands’ “priority seafood species” from “Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)-certified sources”.

Moreover, Marina Bay Sands also wants to source 50% of its entire seafood volume in a responsible manner. In the coming years, the Integrated Resort will attempt to conduct a minimum of “300 green events” for adopting “sustainable packages and offerings” with the support of WWF. Marina Bay Sands’ Senior Vice-President of Hotel Operations, Ian Wilson said:
“As the home to Singapore’s largest hotel, a 1.3 million square ft. convention center, a luxury shopping mall, and other facilities, we recognize the significance and impact of our sustainability actions. In partnership with WWF, we are making great strides toward ensuring all of the seafood served on our property comes from sustainable stock and is sourced responsibly. We hope to elevate sustainability standards, raise awareness among our guests, and inspire other industry players to follow suit.”
