REALCAR Spreads Recycling Trends In Car Manufacturing Sector

It has been a year now since the pioneering project of Jaguar XE took car manufacturing by the wave of recycling strategy.


Dailycsr.com – 29 April 2016 – Along with the Jaguar XE’s celebration of completing one year of sales, the “REALCAR” has touched “a significant milestone”. The REALCAR is a “pioneering recycled aluminium project” which contributed to “saloon’s aluminium-intensive body” won award for the same.
 
The Jaguar Land Rover has been able to reclaim “50,000 tonne of aluminium scrap” into its production process, mainly the XE’s body shell’s weight, whereby preventing over “500,000 tonne of CO2” from being released in to the atmosphere as the company did not use “primary aluminium material”.
 
All this has been possible for the REALCAR project that brings in “11 UK press shops” within a close loop system, whereby the aluminium scraps are segregated for “re-melted” them into “recycled aluminium sheet” which are used in Jaguar Land Rover vehicles.
 
The said research project was led by Jaguar Land Rover and also received a part of its funds from Innovate UK. Moreover, the project also developed “a recycled aluminium-based alloy” which accepts “a higher percentage of the recovered scrap”. In collaboration with Novelis, in the year of 2014, Jaguar’s XE turned out to be the world’s first car with the “innovative high-strength aluminium alloy”.
 
The company has spent over “£7 million” for installing “intricate segregation systems” in its own press shops around “Halewood, Castle Bromwich and Solihull”. The said system captures and distributes the “aluminium scrap for re-melting”, whereby it reduces wastage, and helps to retain “higher quality and value in the material”.
 
Aluminium, thus recovered provides “huge sustainability benefits”, as in recycling process almost ninety five percent of energy can be saved which is otherwise required in the time of “primary aluminium production”.
 
The Engineer Director, Nick Rogers, stated:
“Innovation is at the heart of everything we do at Jaguar Land Rover. We are driven by the desire to produce increasingly world-class, light-weight, vehicles, but we also want to be world leading in how we build them.”
“Innovative projects such as REALCAR demonstrate our commitment to meeting our sustainability challenges head-on. Its success so far marks a significant step towards our goal of having up to 75% recycled aluminium content in our vehicle body structures by 2020.”
 
Moreover, the company has also introduced its “structural grade of recycled aluminium” in “All-New Jaguar XF and F-Pace models”. The REALCAR project forms part of “Jaguar Land Rover’s circular economy strategy” which looks forward to “improve resource efficiency”.
