Duke Energy and Amazon Partner on Rooftop Solar Projects in Kentucky
A new rooftop solar project is providing more clean and renewable solar energy to Duke Energy customers in Northern Kentucky. The project uses over 5,600 solar panels on the roof of the Amazon Air Hub, a 800,000-square-foot facility near the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. The project can produce up to 2 megawatts of solar power, which is enough to power about 400 homes and businesses in the area.
“This rooftop solar project is a new addition to our growing solar portfolio in Kentucky,” said Amy Spiller, president, Duke Energy Ohio and Kentucky. “It will help us meet the increasing energy demand in one of the fastest-growing counties in the state and support our goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.”
The project is a collaboration between Amazon and Duke Energy, which share a commitment to renewable energy. The location of the project is ideal because it has a large and flat roof that receives plenty of sunlight, and it is close to the infrastructure that connects the solar power to the distribution grid and the nearby customers.
“Amazon’s Air Hub is our largest field operation ever, and we built it with sustainability in mind,” said Chris Roe, Amazon director of energy and sustainable operations. “We are happy to partner with Duke Energy on this rooftop solar project, which will generate clean electricity for the local community.” Duke Energy Kentucky also has other solar sites in Grant and Kenton counties.
Duke Energy has two solar power plants in Kenton County, Walton Solar Power Plants 1 & 2, which cover 60 acres of land on York Road. The site has about 19,000 solar panels that can generate more than 4 megawatts of electricity. Another solar power plant is in Grant County, Crittenden Solar Power Plant, which is located on Ruark Road near I-75. The plant has about 12,500 solar panels and can produce more than 2.7 megawatts of electricity.
