IWBI and GBC Italia Partner for Healthier Built Environments in Italy

12/18/2023

The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), a worldwide leader in promoting the transformation of buildings, organizations, and communities towards healthier environments, has recently announced a new partnership with the Green Building Council Italia (GBC Italia). GBC Italia is a member of the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC), the world’s largest organization dedicated to sustainable construction. This partnership aims to increase awareness and implementation of health and well-being standards in built environments such as homes, offices, and public buildings in Italy.

Recognizing the growing importance of safeguarding public health and well-being within urban areas and communities, IWBI has decided to strengthen its involvement in Italy in collaboration with SIMA and GBC Italia.

The collaboration will involve several activities, including:
  • Working together to promote existing standards and protocols to market segments, emphasizing the shared value proposition linking health, well-being, and sustainability.
  • GBC Italia will continue to educate industry professionals about WELL’s educational and training modules and promote the WELL Accredited Professional credential (WELL AP) in Italy. Those who register for the WELL AP exam will have the chance to learn about healthy building practices as they prepare to earn the WELL AP credential, which signifies expertise in WELL and a dedication to promoting human health and well-being in buildings, organizations, and communities.
  • Organizing joint conferences and events to share best practices in sustainable construction and citizen well-being.
  • Collaborating to advocate for policies and regulations that support sustainable construction and occupational well-being in government entities and institutions.
In April 2022, Alessandro Miani, MD, the former President of the Italian Society of Environmental Medicine (SIMA) and a Professor at the University of Milan, joined the IWBI Governance Council. In his strategic advisory role, Professor Miani supports IWBI’s mission by helping to maintain the integrity of IWBI’s certification and rating frameworks and aiding in accelerating market transformation on a global scale. In this role, Alessandro Miani is well-positioned to engage with Italian institutions and stakeholders to promote the adoption and recognition of WELL.

Professor Miani is set to advance the mission and programs of IWBI in Italy, utilizing his vast experience and knowledge to spearhead initiatives that elevate health and well-being standards in urban buildings across Italy.

“We are thrilled to embark on this partnership with the Green Building Council Italia. Our objective extends beyond raising awareness; we aim to actively engage with institutions, businesses, the construction sector, and citizens to incorporate sustainable construction methods that enhance the health and well-being of individuals residing and working in these structures,” states Alessandro Miani.

“Addressing the challenges posed by climate change, which have significant implications for public health, necessitates a comprehensive strategy and a profound dedication to collaboration,” expressed Ann Marie Aguilar, IWBI’s Senior Vice President for the EMEA region.

“In our efforts to support the international real estate industry and tackle these emerging vulnerabilities in our structures, we are delighted to collaborate with GBC Italia and SIMA as we explore avenues to involve the broader industry in driving solutions that benefit both human and environmental health.”

“The focus on citizen well-being is becoming increasingly paramount for GBC Italia. This strategic alliance with IWBI marks a crucial step in reinforcing our nation’s commitment to sustainability, merging the expertise of GBC Italia with the health-centric approach of the International WELL Building Institute,” remarked Fabrizio Capaccioli, President of GBC Italia.

“This partnership highlights the critical role of the built environment in enhancing people’s health and well-being.”

Specifically, IWBI formulates and manages the WELL Standard, the world’s foremost guide for designing and certifying spaces that promote health and well-being. The WELL ecosystem encompasses certification through the WELL Building Standard and the WELL Community Standard pilot, along with ratings that are specific subsets of strategies from the WELL Standard, focusing on thematic, goal-oriented accomplishments that reflect an organization’s dedication to health and well-being. GBC Italia is dedicated to revolutionizing the Italian construction and real estate market by promoting a third-party certification system through proprietary protocols. These protocols set exacting standards for the design and construction of buildings that are healthy, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly.
