Federal Express Corporation, a global leader in express logistics, recently supported environmental education for children living in care homes across the Greater Tokyo Area. The initiative featured a one-day hiking experience designed to immerse participants in nature while emphasizing the value of sustainability and the protection of Japan’s natural landscapes for generations to come.
The program, organized by Mirai no Mori, brought together 13 FedEx employee volunteers and 28 children for a 4-kilometer trek on Mt. Mitake in western Tokyo. Throughout the hike, FedEx volunteers acted as mentors, offering guidance and sharing practical insights on environmental conservation. Beyond learning, the children were given the chance to enjoy the outdoors, discover a new setting, and engage in activities that encouraged curiosity and joy.
“At FedEx, we are committed to empowering both our people and the communities we serve to build a healthier, more sustainable future,” said Kei Alan Kubota, Managing Director of FedEx Japan. “By supporting community-based sustainability efforts, we can strengthen young people’s connection to nature and encourage responsible environmental practices that contribute to Japan’s long-term sustainability. We are proud to play a role in this meaningful initiative.”
In Japan, approximately 23,000 children currently live in care homes, many facing complex challenges as they approach adulthood. Mirai no Mori provides these youth with life-changing opportunities through outdoor programs such as hiking, forestry activities, and river rafting. These experiences help develop essential cognitive, personal, and social skills, equipping participants with the confidence and resilience needed as they transition out of the care system at age 18.
