PayPal is funding research on the spread of illegal arms.

Dailycsr.com – 25 February 2020 – The Gun Violence Archive is an unbiassed organisation that tries to keep a track on all “gun violence” incidents that takes place in the country, whereby the group revealed that “there were 418 mass shootings in the United States last year”.The U.S. is known to have the most “public mass shootings” across the globe. As a result, Americans have pitched their faith in stakeholders for putting an end to the “gun violence epidemic”.

Moreover nearly 69% of the U.S. citizens are of the opinion that companies need to intervene to “address gun control”. Likewise, one such companies have ventured into finding “systematic solutions to the problem”. In an attempt to “generate actionable insights to help address illegal firearm distribution”, Paypal has announced that it is going to fund research into the same.

The above mentioned study will be carried out in collaboration with the “Center on Crime and Community Resilience at Northeastern University along with the University of Chicago Crime Lab”. By gathering data on the issue PayPal seeks to get a better picture of “what types of payment methods are used to finance illegally-sourced firearms in the United States”.

The said announcement was made by the chief executive officer of PayPal, Dan Schulman, in his Linkedln blog post, whereby Schulman added:
“Using our platform for good is at the core of who we are as a company. While this research is only in the initial stages, today’s announcement is a significant first step in taking a collaborative and strategic approach towards eradicating illegally-sourced firearms trafficking.”

Recently, many companies have joined the “gun control debate” and sought “diverse approaches” which looked into “eliminating the sales of firearms in stores” as well as donating large amount to non-profits like “Everytown for Gun Safety” and anything in between. Now PayPal brings a “new dynamic” through its approach. By investing in research to better grasp the reason behind the “spread of illegal firearms”, PayPal hopes to discover solutions that will address many “roots of gun violence issues”.
