Henkel and Synthomer Partner to Cut Carbon Emissions in Adhesives

06/30/2025

Henkel, a global powerhouse in adhesives, sealants, and functional coatings, has entered into a strategic supply partnership with Synthomer, a leading manufacturer of advanced polymers and ingredients. The collaboration aims to reduce carbon emissions in Henkel’s TECHNOMELT hot melt adhesive range across Europe, India, the Middle East, and Africa. This alliance reinforces both companies’ dedication to sustainability through innovative, value-chain partnerships.

This new agreement aligns with the recent launch of Synthomer’s CLIMA product range. Solutions under this brand, such as the REGALITE™ series, achieve a minimum 20% reduction in cradle-to-gate carbon footprint by integrating renewable energy sources into production. Together, Henkel and Synthomer have developed a mechanism that links adhesive products directly to renewable energy use, allowing for measurable and traceable carbon footprint reductions.

At the core of this partnership is a shared commitment to sustainability. Henkel has set a target to cut absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 (using 2021 as a baseline), with the broader ambition of achieving net-zero emissions by 2045. Part of this strategy involves integrating lower-emission raw materials into adhesive formulations without compromising product performance. Synthomer is supporting this effort by striving to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 47% by 2030, based on its 2019 figures and aligned with Science-Based Targets.

Synthomer’s enhanced manufacturing process includes the use of renewable electricity, biogas, and process improvements that significantly shrink the carbon footprint of its products. These reductions are quantified using Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) assessments, adhering to ISO14067 and Together for Sustainability (TfS) standards. TÜV SÜD is independently validating the methodology to ensure transparency and trust.

“As leaders in the adhesive sector, we recognize our responsibility to drive substantial environmental progress,” said Pernille Lind Olsen, Corporate Senior Vice President of Adhesive Technologies at Henkel. “By working with suppliers like Synthomer—who prioritize transparency, innovation, and credible climate action—we are redefining industry leadership while cutting emissions.”

Stephan Lynen, President of Adhesive Solutions at Synthomer, added, “We are proud to help Henkel and their customers access adhesive technologies with a markedly lower carbon footprint. Our ability to do so stems from a strong global network, an extensive product portfolio, and an unwavering commitment to sustainable innovation. We remain focused on fostering partnerships that support more sustainable value chains and reduce global carbon emissions.”

Hot melt adhesives serve a wide range of sectors including packaging, electronics, automotive, and consumer goods. The integration of Synthomer’s CLIMA resins into Henkel’s TECHNOMELT range will help reduce environmental impact while maintaining the superior quality and performance that customers expect. TECHNOMELT products are widely respected for their dependability and effectiveness across multiple industries.

This collaboration exemplifies how strategic partnerships and transparent carbon tracking can push the adhesive industry toward more sustainable standards and innovative practices.
