GN Launches Inclusive Image Library to Tackle Hearing Loss Stigma on World Hearing Day

In recognition of World Hearing Day, GN, an international innovator in hearing technology, is working to address the lack of visibility around hearing loss in mainstream media by unveiling an expanded and more inclusive image collection featuring individuals who live with hearing loss. Recent global findings highlight a notable absence of everyday depictions of hearing loss, along with recurring inaccurate portrayals that contribute to stigma, misunderstanding, and delays in seeking support.

The New Norm Vol. 2 image library offers a range of complimentary, high-resolution photos capturing real people between the ages of 20 and 60 who use hearing aids in their daily lives. Rather than relying on posed studio imagery, the collection emphasizes authentic, real-world settings. These images are freely accessible to journalists, educators, nonprofits, and others covering hearing health, with the goal of replacing outdated stereotypes with modern, empowering visuals that reflect the realities of hearing aid users.

To support the initiative, GN partnered with YouGov to conduct research in Australia, the UK, and the US. The study found that many people—both in the general population and among those experiencing hearing loss—rarely remember seeing hearing aid users represented in mainstream content unless the topic specifically centers on hearing loss.

Laurel Christensen, Ph.D., Chief Audiology Officer at GN, stated that the organization aims to break down long-standing misconceptions and promote the idea that wearing hearing aids can represent confidence and empowerment in everyday life.

Barbara Kelley, Executive Director of the Hearing Loss Association of America, added that realistic and relatable representation can encourage individuals to acknowledge and address their hearing needs. When hearing aids are viewed as practical health tools rather than symbols of aging, people may be more inclined to pursue hearing care as part of proactive overall wellness.
