GoDaddy's Approach to Online Safety and Responsibility
GoDaddy values freedom of expression while also recognizing the need to address harmful online content in a way that safeguards its users. Our approach to maintaining a safe and trustworthy digital environment is detailed in our Trust Center and governed by the guidelines in our Universal Terms of Service (UTOS). Striking a balance between individual expression and accountability is key to creating a secure online space.
As a key player in domain registration and web hosting, GoDaddy serves as a cornerstone of the digital infrastructure, much like a real estate broker in the virtual world. We not only register domains but also provide full-scale hosting services, supporting clients in building and maintaining their online presence. In cases where domains are registered through GoDaddy but hosted by third parties, our direct ability to manage or remove content may be constrained. Nevertheless, we remain committed to identifying and responding to instances of technology misuse. This commitment reflects our broader mission to champion responsible digital behavior and protect the integrity of the internet.
Universal Terms of Service
Our UTOS outlines the global rules for using GoDaddy’s platforms, products, and services. Under these terms, users are strictly prohibited from using our services to engage in or promote illegal or harmful behavior, including child exploitation, terrorism advocacy, non-consensual sharing of intimate images (NCII), selling prescription drugs without proper authorization, or any kind of fraud. Each year, we reassess and test our trust and safety frameworks to address emerging threats.
Customer trust is central to everything we do. We handle feedback and reports with care, continuously improving our services. Our dedicated Trust and Safety Team investigates submitted complaints for possible breaches of our policies. If a violation is found, we may take appropriate action such as suspending or terminating accounts, depending on the severity.

Supporting the Wellbeing of Our Teams
We recognize that trust and safety work—especially when involving sensitive or disturbing content—can significantly impact mental health. That’s why we’ve implemented the Light Switch Protocol (LSP) to help protect team members. This protocol ensures only those who are prepared and have opted in are part of discussions involving topics like child sexual abuse material, hate speech, NCII, or terrorism.
The LSP outlines clear rules about how sensitive information is discussed. When the protocol is "On," participants are authorized to access or discuss explicit details. When it’s "Off," conversations are limited to general terms. This protocol must be observed in meetings, emails, presentations, and other settings where harmful content is being reviewed, minimizing potential psychological harm while ensuring critical issues are addressed effectively.
Working Together for a Safer Internet
GoDaddy is actively involved in several industry collaborations that aim to improve online safety and security. As a member of the Tech Coalition, we work alongside global tech companies to enhance child safety online. In 2024, we contributed to the creation of the Financial Sextortion Prevention Toolkit and mentored a smaller tech company in developing its own child safety initiatives.
We also engage with the i2Coalition’s Tech Policy Briefings and are part of its Cybersecurity and Privacy Working Group. As a founding member of the Secure Hosting Alliance (SHA)—an initiative supported by the i2Coalition—we’re helping establish industry best practices for hosting providers. This alliance aims to create a secure, transparent, and resilient hosting environment. By working with other providers, we’re helping to raise standards, reduce abuse, and improve efficiency while supporting policies that shape the future of the industry.
