FedEx Volunteers Inspire Environmental Awareness Among Children in Japan
Federal Express Corporation, a global leader in express transportation, is helping nurture environmental awareness among children living in care homes across the Greater Tokyo region. Through a one-day hiking initiative, participants were immersed in nature while learning about sustainability and the importance of safeguarding Japan’s natural landscapes for generations to come.
The program, coordinated by Mirai no Mori, brought together 13 FedEx volunteers and 28 children for a 4-kilometer hike on Mt. Mitake in western Tokyo. Throughout the experience, FedEx team members acted as mentors, offering guidance and sharing hands-on insights into environmental protection. Beyond education, the day allowed the children to enjoy the outdoors, discover a new setting, and experience the joy of play—elements that are just as vital as the lessons themselves.

In Japan, approximately 23,000 children currently reside in care homes, many of whom encounter significant obstacles as they approach independence in adulthood. Mirai no Mori addresses these challenges by providing life-changing, nature-centered experiences such as hiking, forestry activities, and river rafting. These programs help young participants develop essential cognitive, personal, and social skills—critical tools that support their transition out of the care system at age 18.
