Ontario International Airport Unveils New Monument Sign Celebrating Local Control
Ontario International Airport (ONT) has unveiled a striking new monument sign at the intersection of Archibald Avenue and Airport Drive, serving as a bold visual symbol of the airport’s transformation and ongoing momentum as it marks a decade under local management.

Replacing the modest, narrow sign that had welcomed visitors since 1998, the new landmark reflects the energy, pride, and ambition of Southern California’s fastest-growing airport. The monument features the iconic “ONT” airport code in towering letters, set against sculpted forms inspired by the nearby San Gabriel Mountains, creating a strong sense of arrival for travelers and guests.

“For nearly 30 years, our gateway sign blended quietly into the background,” said Alan D. Wapner, President of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) Board of Commissioners. “Now, we present a monument that clearly communicates who we are and where we are headed. It embodies the strength of local ownership and highlights ONT’s transformation, reaffirming our position as a premier Southern California and international gateway.”

Standing about 12 feet tall, each of the three “ONT” letters is constructed from durable sheet metal, with the full installation weighing over eight tons. The monument spans roughly 60 feet at its widest point and is secured by a substantial concrete foundation to ensure its longevity. A series of LED light bars will illuminate the sign at night, with color-changing capabilities for holidays, special occasions, and community celebrations.

This unveiling coincides with ONT’s yearlong celebration of its Decade of Local Control, culminating in November to mark ten years since the airport returned to local management on November 1, 2016. This milestone sparked a period of significant growth, customer-focused innovation, and regional economic impact, reinforcing ONT’s status as a leading gateway in Southern California.

Created by Ontario-based Sign Industries, the monument is the result of a close collaboration between airport leadership and local designers. The mountain backdrop consists of multiple modular sections assembled on-site, reflecting the layered peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains and reinforcing the airport’s strong local identity.

For travelers arriving on the airport campus, the new monument delivers a clear message: Ontario International Airport is no longer understated. It now stands prominently as a symbol of regional pride and a testament to the airport’s continued rise.
