Barb, how did your journey at Mary Kay begin?
Back in 1990, I submitted a paper resume through an employment agency that represented Mary Kay. Initially, they didn’t disclose the company’s name, but once I found out, I was thrilled. I had already admired Mary Kay products before moving to Texas, and the idea of working for a company that combined great products with strong values and a mission to empower women was incredibly appealing—and it still is.
What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
Most wouldn’t guess that I grew up on a dairy farm in central Wisconsin. Long before driving a car, I was driving a tractor! It was part of everyday life and taught me responsibility and hard work from a young age… though let’s keep my early tractor-driving adventures just between us and the Department of Public Safety.
One item you can’t live without in your office?
In the 1990s, it was definitely my Rolodex—it was my lifeline to people and information. Today, my cell phone has completely replaced it. It’s essentially my modern-day Rolodex with a lot more features.
Who outside Mary Kay has influenced your life the most?
Without a doubt, my parents. My mother taught me to treat everyone with kindness, while my father encouraged me to approach life with humor and a little sass. Their lessons in compassion, resilience, and authenticity continue to guide me every day.
What advice would you give to others at Mary Kay?
Never underestimate the impact of your work. Whether you’re just starting or have been here for decades, remember that we all play a part in keeping Mary Kay Ash’s dream alive. That legacy isn’t just a tagline—it’s a mission. Give your best, support your colleagues, and let your work reflect the heart of the company.
Did You Know?
The Go Give Award was established in 1978 to honor Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultants who exemplify Mary Kay Ash’s “Go-Give” philosophy. She believed that success isn’t solely about personal achievements—it’s about what you contribute to others. The “Go-Give” mindset promotes selflessness, generosity, encouragement, and kindness, especially when nothing is expected in return.
