LA Kings & Grades of Green Revitalize Inglewood School Gardens
AEG’s LA Kings partnered with the environmental nonprofit Grades of Green to enhance green spaces at two Inglewood, California schools. This collaboration aimed to engage students in experiential learning and environmental awareness through Grades of Green’s Adopt-A-School Garden Program.

LA Kings staff and SoCalGas volunteers joined 60 students at Bennett-Kew Elementary School to revamp the school’s garden into an interactive outdoor classroom. Prior to starting the project, teams followed safety procedures by notifying 811 two days in advance to have underground utilities marked—an essential precaution to avoid accidents, service interruptions, and penalties. Volunteers and students worked together to dig, plant, and explore topics like green infrastructure, the role of trees in improving air quality, and how gardens contribute to healthier communities.

A second event was held on Monday, June 2, at La Tijera K-8 School, where LA Kings employees teamed up with volunteers from Farmacias Similares to rejuvenate another school garden. Principal Robbie Tate opened the event by highlighting how the space would serve as an outdoor classroom to inspire students in science, sustainability, and environmental careers. Students from kindergarten through eighth grade participated in preparing soil, planting vegetables and trees, and learning from Grades of Green educators.

“This collaboration is about more than gardening,” said Amanda Apel, Senior Director of Community Relations for the LA Kings. “It’s about creating spaces where students can grow academically and emotionally while forming deeper connections to the environment. It also gives our team a chance to support lasting change in local communities. We’re grateful to work alongside Grades of Green, SoCalGas, and Farmacias Similares to make that possible.”

Andy Carrasco, Vice President of Communications, Local Government and Community Affairs at SoCalGas, added, “Our team enjoyed working with the students at Bennett-Kew Elementary alongside the LA Kings and Grades of Green. It was a meaningful opportunity to help beautify the campus and teach important lessons about safe digging practices—like always calling 811 before starting any project.”

Grades of Green’s Adopt-A-School initiative promotes greener school environments and outdoor learning spaces. The program gives students hands-on opportunities to explore environmental topics while highlighting the broader benefits of green spaces—from improving air quality and community wellness to encouraging curiosity and career exploration in sustainability.
