Dailycsr.com – 18 January 2019 – Last month, the “United Nations Global Compact” was brought out as encouragement to private sector for making progress on “Sustainable Development Goals”. The enthusiasm seems to have been adopted with a “renewed resolution” by the “UN General Assembly”.

Reiterating the broad directive of the “UN Global Compact”, the resolution drawn under “General Assembly agenda item 27”, titled “Towards global partnerships: A principle-based approach to enhanced cooperation between the United Nations and all relevant partners”, stated about advancing “United Nations values and responsible business practices within the United Nations system and among the global business community”.

The UN Member States came out encouraging the private sector to get more involves in the battle against climate change, besides welcoming the actions that already took place and commitments made by “relevant stakeholders”. The Member States further recognised the private sectors role in fulfilling the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” chalked out by the “Sustainable Development Goals”; as a result, they highlighted the “Global Compact Local Networks” which facilitate ways to diffuse “United Nations values and principles” for building up “partnerships with business on a broad scale”.

Moreover, the UN Member States also acknowledged “the vital role that the United Nations Global Compact Office continues to play with regard to strengthening the capacity of the United Nations to partner strategically with the private sector.” The resolution also supported the UN Global Compact in encouraging the corporate sector to conduct “responsible business and investing” along with accounting for their “environmental, social and governance impacts”.

In the words of the Executive Director as well as the Chief Executive Officer of UN Global Compact, Lise Kingo:
“We thank the UN Member States for their expression of strong confidence towards the work of the UN Global Compact and for renewing their support to us.  We welcome the Member States’ emphasis on accountability, transparency, coherence and risk management in UN-business collaboration, and look forward to continuing our work to ensure that partnerships deliver tangible impact in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.”
