Transform Restrooms into Business Assets with Tork’s Inclusive Hygiene and Sustainability Solutions
Tork, a leading global brand in professional hygiene under Essity, has introduced new guidelines designed to help organizations turn their restrooms into strategic assets that boost visitor satisfaction and overall business results. Drawing on research that highlights a clear gap between user and cleaner satisfaction, Tork’s recommendations emphasize advancing inclusive hygiene, environmental responsibility, and operational efficiency.

According to Tork’s Inclusive Hygiene data, when the needs of restroom users and cleaning staff go unmet, businesses may experience declines in customer engagement and spending. “With three out of four people expressing concern about restroom cleanliness, and half reporting barriers to meeting their personal needs, even small, targeted upgrades to such a highly frequented space can make a measurable difference,” said [Name, Title], Professional Hygiene at Essity.

Prioritizing Inclusive Hygiene

Surveyed restroom visitors identified several essential features that define inclusive hygiene — facilities that accommodate the widest range of needs. When these features are in place, nearly 60% of respondents say a business’s reputation improves:
  • Easy-to-use dispensers for toilet paper and paper towels (67%)
  • Privacy-enhancing layouts and design elements (63%)
  • Disposal bins within stalls for personal and sanitary items (60%)
  • Physical accessibility through ramps, grab bars, and other supportive features (58%)
  • Readily available paper hand towels (57%)
  • Amenities that support caregivers, such as changing stations (40%)

Advancing Sustainability

Although restrooms are often overlooked in sustainability efforts, 67% of people believe environmental responsibility should be a key focus for facility managers.³ To that end, Tork suggests:
  • Educating staff on responsible sourcing and selecting third-party certified products (Tork provides free training and educational tools).
  • Reducing waste through one-at-a-time dispensing systems.
  • Choosing recyclable packaging and compostable paper towels to help divert waste from landfills.
  • Displaying signage that promotes eco-friendly restroom practices — free resources are available at Tork’s Focus on Materials.

Supporting Operational Efficiency

To better support cleaning teams — many of whom report feeling under-resourced — and to elevate visitor experience, Tork advises:
  • Adopting data-driven cleaning technologies that identify where service is needed.
  • Installing high-capacity dispensers to reduce refill frequency.
  • Using compressed towel refills to accommodate more guests between restocks.
  • Choosing ergonomically designed packaging, such as Tork Easy Handling®, to simplify transport, opening, and disposal.
“By addressing these essential areas, businesses can ensure that both restroom users and cleaning staff have what they need for a positive experience,” said Katrin Ferge, Commercial Marketing Manager. “Investing in inclusive hygiene, sustainability, and efficient operations helps organizations meet modern expectations while improving business outcomes.”

Tork continues to lead in sustainable hygiene solutions, focusing on four core impact areas: materials and packaging, use and waste, carbon reduction, and hygiene accessibility for all.
