RWE Redirects $1.22B From U.S. Offshore Wind Projects

RWE U.S. Offshore has entered into an agreement with the U.S. Department of the Interior to settle its claims against the U.S. government and surrender its offshore wind lease interests located off the shores of New York, California, and Louisiana. The agreement gives RWE the opportunity to redirect its investment toward energy initiatives with stronger near-term prospects for value creation and the delivery of dependable, cost-effective power.

RWE U.S. Offshore originally obtained the leases from the federal government as part of a long-term strategy to develop offshore wind generation in U.S. waters. Over time, the company invested more than $1 billion in securing the leases and advancing the associated projects. The leases represented the legal framework needed to pursue offshore wind development and reflected years of development work, capital investment, and cooperation with federal authorities.

Following an extensive assessment, RWE concluded that the projects were unlikely to obtain the necessary permits and move forward in the U.S. within the foreseeable future. The settlement brings the company's legal claims to a close and provides RWE U.S. Offshore with $1.22 billion in settlement proceeds. RWE believes the agreement is in the best interests of its stakeholders and will enable the company to focus its resources on energy opportunities with a clearer path to execution.

RWE Americas and its affiliated companies will continue investing in the U.S. energy sector to help address rapidly rising electricity demand. Key initiatives include:

LNG infrastructure: RWE is investing $900 million to obtain an indirect 16% interest in the Louisiana LNG Project. The investment proceeds will support construction of the LNG export terminal.

Natural gas turbine capacity: RWE Americas has entered into a $300 million turbine reservation agreement to secure future generation capacity as U.S. electricity consumption continues to rise. The company is also building a portfolio of 15 natural gas peaking facilities across selected U.S. markets to expand its flexible power generation capabilities.

Together, these initiatives are designed to provide dependable and affordable energy while contributing to job creation in the United States, improving the resilience of the power grid, and reinforcing national energy security.

Separately, RWE Americas plans to invest approximately €17 billion in the United States over the next six years. The investment program is intended to increase the company's generation portfolio from roughly 13 GW across 27 states today to approximately 22 GW by 2031. During 2025 alone, RWE Americas brought 2 GW of additional power generation capacity online in the U.S.

Despite the change in its U.S. offshore wind portfolio, RWE continues to pursue offshore wind development internationally. The company is among the world's leading offshore wind developers, with 18 offshore wind farms already operating and four additional facilities currently under construction. RWE also has a substantial pipeline of projects under development, including 6.9 GW of offshore wind capacity secured in the UK's latest offshore wind auction.
