Northern Trust's 2024 Philanthropic Impact: $14M Donations, 120K Volunteer Hours, Global Community Support

Last year, Northern Trust contributed over $14 million to non-profit organizations globally, focusing on food and housing security, healthcare access, and educational opportunities. In 2024, the company also donated $70 million to the Northern Trust Foundation to support future charitable initiatives, and employees volunteered nearly 120,000 hours to assist global charitable organizations. Over the past decade, Northern Trust has provided $240 million to nonprofits worldwide.

These contributions and the stories behind them are highlighted in Northern Trust’s 2024 Philanthropic Impact Report. Chief Social Impact Officer Shana Hayes commented, “This report showcases the essential work done by Northern Trust and our employees worldwide, helping people with food and housing security, healthcare, and education. Research shows that meeting basic human needs significantly increases long-term financial success—such as career opportunities, savings, and homeownership—while making the path to better opportunities more accessible. Northern Trust continues to invest in long-term community strategies that foster individual growth and broader wealth creation."

Hayes also expressed pride in the record set by employees in 2024, who dedicated time to support 2,000 organizations globally during the company’s volunteer efforts. In total, Northern Trust’s philanthropic actions in 2024 included:
Food Security: 4,255,935 meals provided Affordable Housing: 252,189 nights of safe shelter Quality Education: 47,871 students supported with education and guidance Accessible Healthcare: 158,326 people received healthcare services
In addition to this, Northern Trust offers employees two paid days each year to volunteer with charitable organizations and provides grants to eligible charities where employees volunteer. During the company’s signature month of service, “Achieving Greater Together” in October, employees participated in activities such as blood donation drives in India, dog walking in Luxembourg, assembling hygiene kits for the homeless in the Philippines, and food drives in the UK, among other efforts. Throughout October, employees volunteered a total of 61,000 hours for over 1,600 nonprofit organizations in 20 countries, and Northern Trust contributed 50 meals for every hour volunteered, totaling more than 3 million meals.

The report also highlights specific initiatives funded by Northern Trust, such as:
Food Security: Citymeals on Wheels, New York City, delivers daily meals and provides vital human contact to housebound seniors. Last year, they delivered over 2 million meals. Housing: Raphael House in San Francisco supports low-income and homeless families by providing stable housing, meals, and access to financial independence programs. In 2024, Northern Trust’s funding helped provide essential resources and holiday assistance to 165 families. Education: Circle Collective in London assists young people facing barriers to employment, offering training and career development. In the past year, Northern Trust employees led career workshops and interactive sessions, helping build confidence and skills among young people. Healthcare: Suhrud Mandal in Pune, India, supports children born with hearing impairments, offering early intervention and education. Northern Trust’s support in 2024 helped upgrade facilities and provide essential equipment, ensuring these children received the resources they need to succeed.
