Mylar Balloons and Power Line Safety: Prevent Outages with These Tips

06/05/2024

Power lines face numerous hazards that can cause outages, including common threats like lightning and fallen tree branches. However, one less obvious but equally dangerous culprit is Mylar balloons. Despite their festive appearance, these shiny, foil-coated balloons can disrupt the electrical grid significantly if they come into contact with power lines, leading to widespread outages. Each year, thousands of Pepco customers experience power interruptions due to Mylar balloons interacting with the electrical infrastructure.

To mitigate the risk posed by Mylar balloons, consider the following tips:
  • Always keep balloons secured with weights.
  • Properly dispose of foil balloons by puncturing them to release the helium, preventing them from floating away.
  • Explore alternative ways to celebrate special occasions without using balloons. Visit PreventBalloonLitter.org for creative ideas on celebrating and honoring loved ones without balloons.
If you spot a balloon caught in a power line, do not attempt to remove it. Always assume power lines are live, and maintain a distance of at least 10 feet.
