During National Blood Donor Month, hospitals in Southern California highlighted an urgent demand for pediatric blood supplies. In response, the LA Kings joined forces with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) for a January-long campaign aimed at boosting awareness and motivating people to donate blood that could help save young lives.
The effort was integrated into several LA Kings home games, giving fans the chance to contribute to easing the shortage of blood products essential for children battling cancer, long-term illnesses, and severe injuries. A single donation could support treatment for as many as two pediatric patients at CHLA.
As a gesture of appreciation, everyone who donated received a complimentary ticket to a selected LA Kings home game that month. Supporters were encouraged to book appointments in advance to keep the donation process smooth and safe.
“National Blood Donor Month is a powerful reminder of how critical blood donations are, particularly for kids facing complex health challenges,” said Amanda Apel, Senior Director of Community Relations for the LA Kings. “Our collaboration with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles allowed us to engage our fans and offer them a simple but meaningful way to make a difference beyond hockey.”
By the close of the campaign, 98 units of blood had been collected, an amount that could benefit up to 200 children receiving care at CHLA.
Established in 1901, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is one of the world’s leading pediatric medical centers. It serves families from across Southern California and farther afield, stands as the largest children’s hospital in Los Angeles County, and is regularly recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top pediatric hospitals in the United States.
This collaboration is part of the LA Kings’ wider community outreach through the Kings Care Foundation, which funds and supports initiatives promoting youth health, learning, and wellbeing throughout the Greater Los Angeles area. Programs such as this blood drive demonstrate the team’s ongoing commitment to creating real, positive change in the community off the ice.
