Kaigene, Inc., a U.S. biotechnology company focused on developing next-generation antibody therapies for autoimmune diseases, has announced an exclusive licensing partnership with Taisho Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., one of Japan's leading pharmaceutical companies. The agreement grants Taisho exclusive rights to develop and commercialize Kaigene's human neonatal Fc receptor (hFcRn) inhibitor, KG006, in the Japanese market.
As part of the deal, Kaigene will receive an upfront payment of $5 million. The company is also eligible for additional milestone payments totaling up to $22 million and ¥57.5 billion (approximately $351 million), contingent upon achieving agreed development, regulatory, and cumulative sales targets. In addition, Kaigene will earn tiered royalties based on KG006's net sales in Japan. Taisho will oversee all aspects of the drug's clinical development, regulatory approval process, and commercial launch within the country.
Taisho brings extensive expertise in autoimmune therapies, having successfully developed and marketed Nanozora®, an anti-TNF VHH treatment, in Japan. The collaboration strengthens Taisho's autoimmune product portfolio while providing Kaigene with an experienced local partner that possesses established clinical development capabilities, regulatory expertise, and a robust commercial infrastructure to support the successful introduction of KG006 in Japan.
The new licensing agreement complements Kaigene's existing global partnership with Celltrion Inc., which holds development and commercialization rights for KG006 outside Greater China and Japan. Subject to future clinical and regulatory planning, Taisho is expected to participate in the planned Phase 3 Multi-Regional Clinical Trial (MRCT) led by Celltrion. This collaboration between Celltrion, Kaigene, and Taisho is intended to enhance global clinical development efforts and potentially shorten the overall development timeline for KG006.
Commenting on the partnership, Minjae Shin, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Kaigene, said the company is excited to collaborate with Taisho, citing its long-standing expertise in successfully delivering advanced antibody therapies to patients. He noted that combining the complementary strengths of all three companies will help accelerate clinical development and commercialization, enabling faster market launches in their respective territories while also exploring additional therapeutic indications. Shin added that with Celltrion leading global development and Taisho serving as the exclusive Japanese partner, the collaboration creates a unified team positioned to maximize KG006's potential as a best-in-class FcRn therapy in the global autoimmune treatment market.
