Did you know that part of the air you breathe actually comes from the ground beneath you?
In part five of our 10-part series on the environmental advantages of turfgrass, we explore how your lawn helps you breathe a little easier.
Benefit 5: Boosting Oxygen Levels In part five of our 10-part series on the environmental advantages of turfgrass, we explore how your lawn helps you breathe a little easier.
Lawns play an important role in oxygen production through the process of photosynthesis. A 2,500-square-foot patch of grass can supply enough oxygen for a family of four each day, and just one acre of healthy turfgrass produces enough oxygen to support 64 people daily.
While trees and houseplants often get the spotlight for generating oxygen, the countless blades of grass underfoot contribute significantly, too.
In fact, some research shows that turfgrass may generate even more oxygen per acre than trees—thanks to its dense growth and the sheer number of actively photosynthesizing blades.
A vibrant, green lawn is a visible sign of active photosynthesis. To keep this process strong, stick to the basics: mow at a higher setting, use fertilizer wisely, and water deeply but less often. These practices encourage a healthy lawn that not only looks great but also works hard to enrich the air you breathe.
