Food Banks’ Role In Balancing Food Wastage And Food Insecurity

Herbalife Nutrition joins “Nutrition for Zero Hunger initiative” to provide nutrition its community.


Dailycsr.com – 30 August 2020 – Globally, “41 tons of food” gets wasted every second. A shocking number to come across more so when seen in context with the global food insecurity figures as people do not have either “sufficient or stable” food access on a daily basis to meet with their basic nutritional needs.
 
Moreover, the “Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations” informs that over “820 million people” are insecure about food, while Colombia is no exception. As much as “9.76 million tons of food” wastage takes place globally while 54.2% homes experience food insecurity. Additionally, food waste leave repercussion on the environment in the form of landfills and large quantity of methane production.
 
Methane and CO2 are among the greenhouse gases responsible for heating up the atmosphere of the earth leading to global warming. Juan Carlos Buitrago Ortiz is the director of Food Banks Association in Colombia who talked about the role of food banks in addressing food insecurity and wastage. Herbalife Nutrition is a partner, said Ortiz, that support in the work of supplying “nutritious food to their communities through their Nutrition for Zero Hunger initiative”.
