‘Exciting Times’ Towards E-Mobility Revolution And A Paradigm Shift In Tech Eco-System


Keysight Technologies confident about “bringing the vision of a more sustainable energy ecosystem to reality faster”.

Dailycsr.com – 27 June 2020 – Automotive engineering community as well as “environmental sustainability” fields are going through “exciting times” as there is a global movements by countries to create a “cleaner future”. Attempts through various “incentives” are being offered for the customers to choose electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles.
Moreover, in the coming two decades many more “high-level global initiatives” are likely to surface whereby ushering in “the e-mobility revolution faster than expected” as it raises hopes for experiencing “positive environmental impact sooner”. Even though twenty years sounds quite a long time for these vehicles to come to the market, the work is a formidable one which involves “an entire engineering paradigm shift” adapting to “e-mobility ecosystem”.
The secret behind this transition lies in “innovative electronic design and test solutions” besides speeding up the process safely by keeping in mind the “intended positive environmental outcome”.
The process of electrification would set in “an entire energy ecosystem” which would include “photovoltaic (PV) inverters”, harnessing and converting solar energy, storing and distribution solutions of energy, either in “microgrids or smart grids”, charging infrastructure and innovation for power and batteries. Moreover, the growing industry regulations have also increased challenges for the engineers as they have to “verify and test each design from development through high-volume production”.
Likewise, many “many electronic devices and sub-systems” goes into the making of the EV microcosm. Here are some of the challenges which need innovative solutions, as mentioned in the Keysight Technologies blog:
  • “Power devices – New test methods are needed to produce reliable and repeatable measurements of new wide bandgap semiconductors used in EVs and HEVs. Besides ensuring safety of the test engineers, the devices under test need extra protection due to the high voltage and high temperature environments which these devices work under.
  • “Power conversion – One of the most noticeable changes in vehicle electrification is the addition of high-voltage, high-power batteries to a platform that is traditionally 12 volts. HEV and EV batteries are 300 volts and higher, bringing with them additional test costs and risks that must be mitigated.
  • “Cells and batteries – While much progress has been made to extend the mileage range of HEVs and EVs since they first entered the consumer market, mass adoption of the e-mobility ecosystem will require cells and batteries with even better range performance while meeting high safety requirements and maintaining affordable margins.
  • “EV-to-grid communication – Charging stations, home energy management systems, microgrids and smart grids all play a vital role in this ecosystem, and require new approaches to support the mass adoption of an e-mobility future”.
