In celebration of Women’s History Month 2024, Sands is highlighting influential women who contribute to the company’s success and embody its values of professional development. One such individual is Tracey Edwards, who recently joined Sands New York as the senior vice president/corporate social responsibility officer after a distinguished career spanning corporate, civic, and nonprofit leadership roles.

Before her tenure at Sands New York, Edwards held the position of Commissioner at the New York State Public Service Commission, where she played a pivotal role in ensuring reliable access to essential services such as electricity, gas, and telecommunications while prioritizing environmental conservation.

With a wealth of experience at Verizon, Edwards served in various leadership capacities, including as region president overseeing thousands of employees responsible for telecommunications services throughout New York. She also spearheaded initiatives related to staffing, diversity, and ethics during her tenure at Verizon, in addition to serving as president of the Empire City Subway Company, a Verizon subsidiary focusing on engineering and construction services.

Transitioning from her corporate background, Edwards established her own consulting firm, specializing in branding, diversity, equity, inclusion, and organizational development.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Edwards is actively involved in several charitable organizations, serving on the boards of directors for the NAACP, New Hour for Women and Children, and the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund. She also holds the position of Long Island regional director for the NAACP New York State Conference and has previously contributed her leadership to organizations such as the United Way of Long Island, Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk, and the Melville Lions Club.

Describe your career journey and current position at Sands New York.
"After more than three decades of experience in both the public and private sectors, I had the privilege of joining Sands in October 2023 as the senior vice president and corporate social responsibility officer. In this capacity, I am tasked with aligning our strategic objectives and overseeing initiatives for our upcoming integrated resort venture in New York."

Reflect on the skills, training, mentors, or experiences that have contributed to your career success.
"I've been fortunate to have a network of women spanning various departments whom I could rely on for guidance, support, and collaboration. Likewise, I've provided assistance to them when needed. Building a community of mutual support is crucial; it's easier when we depend on and uplift one another. I've also had both male and female advocates who played pivotal roles in my journey.

My approach has always been to ensure that my work ethic was unmatched, regardless of gender. However, I've also recognized the importance of pacing oneself and maintaining well-being while striving for excellence. Surviving breast cancer underscored the value of self-care for me; taking short naps after work rejuvenated me for family commitments and additional tasks."

Share your thoughts on improving the workplace to empower and support women.
"Participating in initiatives like the EmpowHER Team Member resource group for women is a positive step. Additionally, implementing mentoring programs led by executives, where practical scenarios are presented for guidance and advice, can foster professional growth and empowerment."

Offer advice for individuals, especially women, seeking career advancement.
"Be proactive in seeking challenging assignments and embrace lateral movement within the organization to gain exposure to different functions. As you broaden your understanding of the business, opportunities for advancement will naturally arise. Focus on contributing to the growth and success of the business through innovation.

Furthermore, don't shy away from tasks others may avoid; tackling these challenges can enhance your value and reputation within the organization."
