Eco-Friendly Bottle Redesign Cuts Plastic Use by 10%
In 2023, we introduced a long-term development initiative known as Sugar Ray.

This program led to a complete redesign of the large-format Ready-To-Use bottles for 30 products, including Ortho Home Defense, Bug-B-Gon, and Ortho GroundClear. The primary goals were to create a lighter, more user- and manufacturing-friendly package while maintaining or enhancing durability and performance.

“As a result, we developed a new bottle featuring optimized geometry, an ergonomically improved handle, and a larger label area for better consumer communication,” explains Brad Schultz, Senior Research Principal. “Even more significant, the updated design uses about 10% less plastic resin compared to earlier versions.”

This achievement was made possible by refining production methods at both supplier and in-house facilities, improving energy efficiency, and minimizing scrap and waste.

Additionally, the closure system for the large Ready-To-Use products was redesigned to be simpler and more intuitive, while reducing the total component weight by 20% compared to the previous version.

Once fully implemented across the product range, this redesign is projected to cut High-Density Polyethylene resin usage by 1.24 million pounds, while continuing to deliver durable, high-quality, and consumer-friendly packaging.
