To mark International Water Safety Day on May 15, the Duke Energy Foundation has awarded a grant to the City of New Port Richey, aimed at supporting swim instruction and summer camp scholarships.
"At Duke Energy, safety is a core value," said Melissa Seixas, state president of Duke Energy Florida. "Teaching children how to stay safe around water through swim lessons is both enjoyable and essential. We're proud to partner with the City of New Port Richey and help extend these valuable programs to even more families this summer."
The City of New Port Richey will be hosting its summer day camp for local residents from June 2 through August 8. Families can register by contacting the Recreation and Aquatic Center at 727-841-4560 or by clicking here. Some spaces are still available.
“We sincerely appreciate the Duke Energy Foundation’s contribution to our summer programs,” said Kevin Trapp, assistant director of parks and recreation. “Their support helps eliminate financial obstacles for families and allows more children to participate in swim lessons and camps that teach vital life-saving and confidence-building skills.”
To help keep everyone safe around water this season, the American Red Cross offers these essential water safety tips:
Only swim in areas monitored by lifeguards. Never swim alone—always go with a buddy. Wear a life jacket when boating. Secure your pool or hot tub with barriers. Closely watch children anytime they are near water. Stay within arm’s reach of young kids and keep distractions to a minimum. If someone is struggling in the water, throw a flotation device or reach out—never jump in. Store unused toys away from the pool to prevent accidents.
