Discover BREEAM: Leading Sustainability Certification for UK Buildings

03/22/2024

CBRE has proudly announced that its new headquarters in Glasgow has attained one of the highest sustainability ratings in the UK. Situated at 177 Bothwell Street, the global real estate advisor's offices have received the esteemed BREEAM 'Excellent' rating from the Building Research Establishment (BRE), placing it in the top echelon of fit-out projects across the country.

The move to 177 Bothwell Street last January marked a significant milestone for CBRE, consolidating more than 400 employees from three offices into one, fostering greater collaboration. Occupying the building's ground floor, spanning 18,000 sq ft, CBRE's presence underscores its commitment to sustainable practices.

The decision to establish its West of Scotland hub at 177 Bothwell Street was influenced by the building's strong environmental credentials. Powered entirely by green energy from local sources, the building aligns with CBRE's pledge to reduce carbon emissions. Moreover, its amenities, including a rooftop running track, seating areas, and high-quality changing facilities, promote employee well-being.

Achieving the excellent BREEAM rating was a collaborative effort led by CBRE's in-house team, comprising designers, MEP specialists, project managers, and BREEAM assessors. Notably, the absence of comments or suggested improvements from BRE underscores the team's dedication and diligence throughout the process. This accomplishment underscores CBRE's commitment to integrating environmental considerations into its real estate decisions.

David Smith, Managing Director of Scotland, emphasized the importance of showcasing a commitment to environmental responsibility to clients. The achievement of the BREEAM excellent rating at 177 Bothwell Street aligns with CBRE's Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments, with a growing number of its UK-occupied buildings holding green certifications.

This milestone at 177 Bothwell Street not only furthers CBRE's ESG goals but also sets a benchmark for best practices in sustainable real estate development. Among only seven projects in Scotland to achieve BREEAM Excellent status, this accomplishment speaks volumes about the expertise and dedication of the team involved in the certification process.

Giulia Mori, the Health and Wellbeing Lead at CBRE UK's ESG Consultancy, highlights the prominence of BREEAM as the leading sustainability certification in the UK. BREEAM's criteria evaluate a building's environmental performance during construction or renovation, considering aspects such as materials, waste management, energy usage, and water conservation.
