DaVita Expands Community Health Events With Free Screenings in Orlando, Houston, and Los Angeles

Studies indicate that many Americans only visit a doctor when they’re already unwell. Nearly two-thirds of adults take a reactive stance toward their health—seeking medical care only when symptoms feel severe. In fact, by 2021, about one in five adults had gone without a doctor’s visit for five years or more.

Barriers such as lack of insurance, limited time, transportation challenges, and the intimidating atmosphere of traditional healthcare settings deepen inequities and make it harder for people to access routine care.

Community-based health events offer a meaningful way to bridge these gaps. By bringing preventive screenings and health education into trusted, familiar spaces, they help people feel more comfortable and confident in taking charge of their wellbeing—ultimately leading to better outcomes.

“It’s important to have these opportunities because not everyone has access or makes the time to see a doctor. Having this here gives us something useful to share with our primary care provider. I’m so grateful DaVita is doing this for us,” said a participant at a DaVita community health event.

Building on earlier efforts, DaVita is rolling out this year’s Community Health Experience, a three-city initiative in Orlando, Houston, and Los Angeles—areas identified as facing significant obstacles to healthcare access. These events will provide free health education along with no-cost screenings for conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney disease. Early detection through these services makes timely care possible, slowing disease progression and reducing the burden of chronic illness while improving long-term outcomes.

The true impact of these events comes from meeting people where they are. Even a single encounter can give individuals vital knowledge and tools, inspiring them to take proactive steps in managing their health.

“When I heard about the free health screenings on the news, I brought my entire family. We lost our insurance and haven’t been able to see a doctor in over a year,” said a participant at a DaVita community health event
