Covia Advances Water Stewardship with Innovative Efficiency and Conservation Initiatives

10/28/2025

Responsible water management is a cornerstone of operations across Covia’s mining and processing facilities. The company continuously invests in advanced technologies and creative strategies to lower water consumption, enhance water quality, and protect local water resources. Covia’s comprehensive approach prioritizes maximizing efficiency, boosting reuse through a robust recycling program, and driving progress through multiple water stewardship initiatives.

Covia’s water stewardship efforts include:
Water management and efficiency programs Conservation plans for surface and groundwater resources Assessment of water-related risks and opportunities Compliance with water quality standards Monitoring of water-stressed regions Site-level training and education Collaboration with local partners
Water Efficiency Highlights
Optimizing Water Use at the Dividing Creek, New Jersey Plant
At the Dividing Creek facility, Covia improved the efficiency of its VS-102 vibrating screen spray bars—equipment that cleans and separates materials using water sprays. By repurposing an existing sump, pump, and about 200 feet of 6-inch piping, the project eliminated the need to drill new wells for water extraction. This initiative not only significantly reduced costs for new equipment and materials but also achieved a substantial reduction in water use.

Protecting the Aquifer at the Roff, Oklahoma Plant
In Roff, Oklahoma, each Eastern Red Cedar tree extracts around 50 gallons of water per day from the Arbuckle Simpson Aquifer—over 18,000 gallons annually. Originally native to the region, these trees spread widely due to fire suppression practices and a 1930s soil conservation campaign, and they are now considered invasive. Since 2022, Covia’s Roff team has actively removed these trees and restored native grasslands. In 2024 alone, nearly 1,000 trees were cleared, conserving more than 18 million gallons of groundwater. To date, over 23.6 million gallons have been saved through this effort, with continued removal planned in the coming years.

Covia continues to see consistent improvements in water performance, including reductions in both water withdrawal and consumption—independent of the Energy business spin-off.

2024 Performance Snapshot:
27,440 thousand cubic meters of fresh water withdrawn 7,636 thousand cubic meters of fresh water consumed 100% of sites reporting water withdrawals 87% of sites reporting water consumption
These positive trends are largely driven by the company’s expanded water reporting practices, which increase awareness of usage and encourage proactive stewardship. This data-driven approach helps plant teams pinpoint new opportunities to improve water performance across all operations.
