Families throughout Michigan are increasingly strained by rising living costs, from groceries to housing. In recognition of 2-1-1 Day, Consumers Energy is spotlighting how authentic engagement, compassionate outreach, and timely assistance can make a lasting difference for individuals and families facing hardship.
More than a simple helpline, 2-1-1 serves as a vital lifeline for Michigan residents during challenging moments. Through its ongoing collaboration with Michigan 2-1-1, Consumers Energy helps customers access essential resources, including financial support for energy bills. Together, the organizations strive to ease financial burdens with empathy, respect, and prompt action.
“Every call to 2-1-1 represents a person or family searching for help during a difficult time,” said Angela Thompkins, chief diversity officer and vice president of community affairs at Consumers Energy. “Our commitment goes beyond providing energy—we are focused on connecting customers with resources that bring relief, stability, and renewed hope.”
The 2-1-1 service is free and links callers with nonprofit groups that offer assistance for Consumers Energy bills and other household needs such as food support and medical expense aid. This initiative aligns with Consumers Energy’s broader mission to be a reliable and supportive partner for its customers.
Consumers Energy maintains deep roots in the communities it serves, viewing customers as neighbors and family. These connections are strengthened through long-standing partnerships. In the past year, the Consumers Energy Foundation, CMS Energy Foundation, Consumers Energy, and employees and retirees donated more than $17 million to Michigan nonprofits, including nearly $600,000 raised through the employee-driven United Way campaign.
Continuing this community-first approach, the company began 2026 with a $5 million investment in 11 local nonprofit organizations to deliver targeted assistance where it is most needed.
“For families dealing with unexpected challenges—whether food insecurity, medical expenses, or heating costs—2-1-1 is available to provide support,” Thompkins added. “We are proud to partner with an organization working to build a more secure future for Michigan families.”
Consumers Energy is the state’s largest energy provider, supplying electricity and/or natural gas to 6.8 million of Michigan’s 10 million residents across all 68 counties in the Lower Peninsula. The company remains committed to delivering dependable and affordable energy around the clock.
