Carton Recycling Grants for K-12 Schools in U.S. and Canada

Carton Recycling Grants for K-12 Schools in U.S. and Canada

K-12 schools across the United States and Canada have an opportunity to strengthen their recycling programs with help from the Carton Council, which is offering grants of up to $5,000. These funds aim to support the creation, improvement, or expansion of carton recycling efforts specifically for food and beverage containers.

On average, schools generate around 75,000 used cartons annually from milk, juice, and similar products. Yet, only about 10% of U.S. schools currently recycle them. In Canada, food and beverage cartons account for more than 9% of the waste from elementary schools that ends up in landfills. These figures point to the need for better access to carton recycling and increased participation among schools. By recycling these materials, schools contribute to the creation of new products such as paper goods and high-quality building supplies.

The Carton Council’s 2025 grant program runs from April 1 through May 31, 2025. Public and private K-12 schools, districts, school-affiliated groups, local governments, or individuals involved in supporting school recycling efforts in both the U.S. and Canada are eligible to apply. Applicants must verify their access to carton recycling services through their local waste provider and obtain approval from school administration prior to submitting their application.

“Schools that separate empty cartons for recycling help divert waste from landfills and support the production of new materials,” said Jordan Fengel, executive director of the Carton Council. “In addition to the environmental benefits, schools may also cut waste disposal costs and create meaningful educational experiences around sustainability.”

Grant funds may be used for a variety of purposes, including the purchase of bins and sorting tools, educational signage, promotional materials, or forming student-led “green teams.” Previous grantees have successfully used the funding to start or upgrade recycling programs, cut down on waste, and involve students in eco-friendly initiatives.

Schools eager to improve their recycling programs are encouraged to apply by the May 31, 2025 deadline. Awardees will be announced in June, with funding distributed shortly afterward. Comprehensive guidance and resources are available to help schools implement carton recycling initiatives. U.S. schools can apply at Recyclecartons.com/schools, while Canadian schools should visit RecycleCartons.ca/project/2025-carton-recycling-grant-program-for-schools for more information.
