Boeing’s Unmanned Air Vehicle Is An ‘Environmental-Friendly’ Prototype Helps To Shape The Future Of Aerospace Technology At Boeing

With vertical landing-takeoff features and electric propulsion, reducing environmental footprint, Boeing paves the future way for its aerospace travelling.


Dailycsr.com – 18 January 2018 – Boeing has come out with its “new unmanned electric” cargo vehicle that flies and has a “vertical-takeoff-and-landing”. The said air vehicle prototype, called eVTOL, is for testing purpose which will pave the way towards “Boeing's autonomy technology for future aerospace vehicles”.
 
The new unmanned cargo unveiled by Boeing has been designed for transporting “a payload up to 500 pounds” that would possible cater to “future cargo and logistics applications”. The chief technology officer at Boeing, Greg Hyslop, said:
“This flying cargo air vehicle represents another major step in our Boeing eVTOL strategy. We have an opportunity to really change air travel and transport, and we'll look back on this day as a major step in that journey.”
 
The prototype of the cargo air vehicle, CAV in short, was built in period of “less than three months” by collaborative team of Boeing’s technicians and engineers. The initial tests carried out at the “Boeing Research & Technology's Collaborative Autonomous Systems Laboratory” situated in Missouri were successful.
 
The researches at Boeing are going to use the CAV prototype as a “flying test bed” for strengthening the future applications of autonomous technology. The development of CAV prototype was headed by Boeing HorizonX and “Boeing Research & Technology”, whereby complementing the “eVTOL passenger air vehicle prototype aircraft” which is in the developmental stage under Aurora Flight Sciences.
 
While, the Vice President at Boeing HorizonX, Steve Nordlund, said:
“Our new CAV prototype builds on Boeing's existing unmanned systems capabilities and presents new possibilities for autonomous cargo delivery, logistics and other transportation applications. The safe integration of unmanned aerial systems is vital to unlocking their full potential. Boeing has an unmatched track record, regulatory know-how and systematic approach to deliver solutions that will shape the future of autonomous flight.”
 
The vehicle features an “environmentally-friendly electric propulsion system” along with “eight counter rotating blades” which allows the vehicle to take off vertically. The said vehicle is “4.57 meters” in length and “5.49 meters” in width, while its height is “1.22 meters” weighs around “339” kg.
