Be Prepared: Tornado Season Readiness Tips & Home Depot Foundation's Disaster Relief Efforts
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in 2023, the United States faced a total of 28 weather and climate disasters, each resulting in losses exceeding $1 billion. This marks a significant contrast to the three billion-dollar weather disasters recorded in 1980.

With the frequency and severity of severe weather and climate events increasing annually, it becomes imperative to have a preparedness strategy in place. March emerges as an opportune time to initiate preparations, as early spring often witnesses heightened occurrences of tornadoes, hail, high winds, and flooding.

On average, approximately 1,200 tornadoes hit the U.S. annually. Given their rapid development from thunderstorms, readiness for potential tornado strikes becomes paramount. Implementing proactive measures now can significantly contribute to readiness and safety before the tornado season unfolds. Here are some steps you can take:

  • Stay updated with weather forecasts regularly.
  • Enroll in your community's weather notification systems.
  • Identify a secure room within your home or nearby building for shelter.
  • Develop and rehearse a comprehensive family emergency plan.

In times of crisis, The Home Depot Foundation remains committed to lending assistance. Annually, Team Depot, the volunteer force comprising associates from The Home Depot, assembles thousands of disaster relief kits in anticipation of severe weather seasons. Through year-round preparation, Team Depot and the Foundation's nonprofit partners stand ready to promptly respond and aid communities in distress.
