AMD’s Role in Semiconductor Climate Consortium for Sustainable Practices

12/26/2023

In the latter part of 2022, AMD joined the Semiconductor Climate Consortium as a founding member. This consortium is a collective of semiconductor companies dedicated to addressing climate change issues. In line with the Paris Agreement, the consortium accelerates efforts across the industry value chain to curtail greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in both member company operations and other sectors of our value chain.

The consortium has expanded to include over 80 semiconductor companies, such as Applied Materials, ASML, GlobalFoundries, Micron, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and TSMC, in addition to AMD. These member companies work together to find ways to lessen the environmental footprint of the semiconductor industry. This includes efforts to decrease energy consumption and GHG emissions, enhance water usage efficiency, and encourage the adoption of renewable energy.

As a company that outsources its semiconductor manufacturing, AMD’s scope 3 emissions (those associated with activities beyond our direct operations) surpass our operational scope 1 and 2 emissions. To address this, AMD is actively engaging with industry stakeholders to identify opportunities to cut down our scope 3 emissions.

AMD is part of discussions exploring the challenges and possibilities for our suppliers to tap into renewable energy sources globally. AMD recently became a member of the Consortium’s Energy Collaborative to gain a deeper understanding of the intricacies of, and work towards removing obstacles around, the installation of low-carbon energy sources in the Asia-Pacific region. This collaborative, a group of industry frontrunners, will issue a unified supply statement to energy stakeholders to facilitate broader access to low-carbon energy in the region. AMD is also a participant in the Environmental Risk Reporting and Mitigation Working Group.

The Consortium actively engages with policymakers, NGOs, and other stakeholders to advocate for sustainable practices in the semiconductor industry and policies that facilitate the shift to a low-carbon economy.
