Innovative Trauma Solutions Research: $34M Funding from U.S. Army Medical Research
3M Health Care's Medical Solutions Division, a global leader in advanced wound care, has secured a $34.2 million grant from the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity. The purpose of this funding is to pioneer innovative solutions for infection prevention, wound management, and wound healing. Specifically, 3M will spearhead a program concentrating on treatment strategies applicable in challenging environments, particularly those associated with mass casualty scenarios and delayed evacuation circumstances – key priorities outlined in the Department of Defense Combat Casualty Care Capability Assessment.

The initiative will also address critical aspects like biofilm control, biomarker monitoring, and healing in acute trauma situations, such as blasts, burns, and gunshot wounds, prevalent in both civilian and military settings. To ensure the success of this program, 3M will collaborate with esteemed partners, including the University of Minnesota Medical School, the 59th Medical Wing Science & Technology Office of the Chief Scientist (59MDW/ST, the lead military partner), Naval Medical Research Unit-San Antonio (NAMRU-SA), and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio).

The allocated funds will be dedicated to the development of four distinct product solutions, encompassing activities ranging from prototype and formulation development to the completion of two clinical studies aimed at facilitating product registration.

"Successful treatment of acute, traumatic wounds requires a continuum of care that begins with easy-to-use dressings and effective infection prevention that can be applied at the point of injury, continues with portable solutions for transport, and transitions to more sophisticated solutions in hospital settings suitable for rehabilitation and reintegration of patients," said Raymond Chiu, senior vice president, research & development, 3M Health Care Business Group.

"3M is proud to be working with civilian and military partners to bring these solutions to fruition."
The planned project involves a minimum of six principal investigators leading studies at three distinct sites throughout the United States. Over 125 support personnel will actively participate in the research activities spanning the award period from FY 2023 to FY 2027.

Effectively addressing and stabilizing traumatic injuries in the field demands rapid, efficient, and user-friendly solutions that enhance capabilities at the injury site. The innovative solutions developed and showcased in this program will also be well-suited for application in civilian traumatic, burn, and chronic wound care scenarios.

The U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity, located at 808 Schreider Street, Fort Detrick MD 21702-5014, serves as the awarding and administering acquisition office for this initiative. In the conduct of research involving animals, the investigator(s) strictly adheres to the laws of the United States and the regulations set forth by the Department of Agriculture.

Funding for this work, amounting to $34,191,124, has been provided by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs through the Defense Health Agency Expeditionary Medicine Research and Development Program under Award No. HT94252320059.
