Memphis, Tennessee, serves as the global headquarters of FedEx and is home to more than 30,000 team members. The city is known for its deep cultural roots, talented people and rich history, while its determination and energy remain a source of pride for the company. At the same time, Memphis continues to face significant challenges. Nearly 25% of its residents live in poverty, while thousands of young adults are not enrolled in school or employed. These circumstances have far-reaching effects on families and communities and could influence the workforce that will shape Memphis for years to come.

During 2025, the FedEx Cares team collaborated with city specialists, nonprofit organizations, employees and other Memphis residents to better understand the barriers affecting the city's workforce, both today and in the future. Following months of conversations, research and community engagement, FedEx introduced a new initiative called Mobilizing Memphis' Workforce Potential. The strategy is designed to address poverty, expand access to opportunities, strengthen inclusion and contribute to a more resilient Memphis.

Launching new career opportunities

Several Memphis residents have already gained the education, training and credentials needed to pursue new career paths through nonprofits supported by FedEx.

Madison Smith, an Army veteran, developed welding and machining expertise at Moore Tech and is now pursuing a career opportunity with Toyota Motor Manufacturing.

Cyrille Connor received training in workplace fundamentals, industrial electricity and plant maintenance at Moore Tech before securing a position as a Maintenance Technician with Lallemand.

Zakaria Culp completed EMT training through the Memphis Medical District Collaborative's Hire Local program. The achievement is helping her pursue her long-held goal of becoming a paramedic firefighter.

Alan Manteiga graduated from the Memphis Excel Center and intends to continue his higher education at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology.

Addressing basic needs so families can pursue their goals

FedEx has also partnered with Feed the Children to address another major challenge facing Memphis families: ensuring that children and parents have access to food, household essentials and other resources so they can concentrate on education, employment and family priorities.

Across the United States, approximately one in five children experiences food insecurity. In Memphis, some families face difficult choices between paying for housing and purchasing groceries, school supplies or personal hygiene products. To help address these needs, FedEx and Feed the Children have established a year-round support model built around four key programs:

Feed the Children's Food & Essentials hubs located within Memphis-Shelby County schools provide students and their families with regular access to nutritious food, personal-care products and educational materials.

Feed the Children's Summer Feed & Read program provides children with food and books during the summer, helping maintain access to meals and opportunities for learning while schools are closed.

Feed the Children's Backpack-N-Go program equips students with school supplies each year, helping them begin the academic year prepared.

Feed the Children's Resource Rallies distribute food, hygiene products and other necessities directly to families experiencing financial difficulties.

In 2025, these combined efforts supported more than 7,300 Memphis residents, providing over 108,000 meals and more than $550,000 worth of food, hygiene products, books and backpacks.

Recognition for community impact

FedEx received the Inspire Award from Slingshot Memphis in recognition of its efforts to address poverty and support long-term positive change in its headquarters community.
Learn more about FedEx, Slingshot Memphis and the Inspire Award

FedEx's continuing work across Memphis

FedEx employees contributed to the Memphis community throughout the past year through skills-based volunteering, hands-on service and partnerships with organizations ranging from large nonprofits to grassroots community groups.

Jenny Robertson, SVP of Marketing & Communications at FedEx, said the company's employees take pride in supporting their neighbors through community programs and volunteer activities. She emphasized FedEx's commitment to strengthening local communities and creating positive change globally, beginning with the communities where its employees live and work.

AEG Presents, together with the City of San Francisco and NonPlus Ultra, brought 50 students and young professionals into its College Connection Program during the 2026 Portola Music Festival. The workforce initiative was designed to introduce participants to career opportunities in the live entertainment industry through mentoring, professional development and practical, behind-the-scenes experience.

The one-day program gave participants an inside look at the work involved in producing a major music festival while providing opportunities to interact directly with professionals from different areas of the entertainment business. A guided tour of the festival site, led by Goldenvoice Director of Festival Operations Tim Le, offered participants a closer understanding of the planning, coordination and logistical work required to stage a large-scale event.

Exploring Careers Behind the Music

The program also featured a career panel with representatives from AEG Presents, Goldenvoice and the San Francisco Entertainment Commission. Speakers discussed their professional experiences and provided insight into career possibilities throughout the live entertainment sector.

Participants learned that the industry encompasses far more than performers and artists, with career opportunities spanning event operations, marketing, production, sales, partnerships and community engagement.

Career preparation continued through speed-mentoring sessions involving professionals from merchandise, partner activations, sales, marketing and production. Participants also received individual résumé feedback from AEG Presents' Human Resources team and took part in a networking lunch intended to help them establish connections with industry professionals and fellow participants.

Program Leads to Employment Opportunities

The initiative produced direct employment outcomes. Thirteen participants were hired to work with the Portola Music Festival team in positions covering box office operations, guest services and marketing. Others received access to internships, mentoring and additional professional development opportunities through AEG Presents and its partner organizations.

“Live entertainment offers a wide range of rewarding careers, yet many young people are not aware of the opportunities available to them. Through College Connection, we’re helping bridge that gap by providing students and emerging professionals with direct access to industry leaders, practical experience and pathways to employment,” said Twana Simmons, DEI Business Partner at AEG Presents.

“We’re proud to partner with the City of San Francisco and community stakeholders to help develop the next generation of talent and create greater access to careers in our industry,” Simmons added.

Building the Future Entertainment Workforce

The College Connection Program forms part of AEG Presents’ broader workforce-development efforts. By combining industry access, hands-on learning, mentoring and employment opportunities, the program is intended to lower some of the barriers faced by people seeking to enter the live entertainment business.

The initiative also brings together private-sector companies, public agencies and community partners around workforce development. By exposing emerging professionals to the many roles involved in producing live events, AEG Presents aims to help develop a broader pipeline of talent for the industry's future.

Programs such as College Connection give students and early-career professionals an opportunity to gain practical knowledge, develop professional relationships and better understand the range of careers available behind the scenes of live entertainment.

Members of a Georgia-based philanthropic collaborative recently stopped by the Athens Land Trust (ALT) as part of a statewide tour highlighting Drawdown Georgia Climate Solutions & Equity Grant recipients. In 2023–24, ALT was awarded a two-year, $200,000 grant to enhance energy efficiency and expand workforce development programs in historically underinvested neighborhoods across Athens-Clarke County, Georgia.

The Athens Energy Opportunity Project builds upon two of ALT’s cornerstone initiatives launched in the Historic West Broad community: the West Broad Neighborhood Sustainability Project and the Young Urban Builders (YUB) workforce training program.

The West Broad Neighborhood Sustainability Project tackles barriers faced by low-income and historically marginalized residents in accessing energy-efficient technologies, weatherization programs, and renewable energy solutions. By pairing these efforts with community capacity building, ALT has empowered residents to take leadership roles in implementing and managing sustainability initiatives within their own neighborhoods. Through collaboration with YUB, these projects have also created career pathways for local youth in sustainable construction, energy efficiency, and solar energy.

In 2024, with support from the Drawdown Georgia grant, ALT expanded the West Broad initiative into North Athens and East Athens.

Young Urban Builders (YUB) is a paid training program for Athens youth ages 16 to 25, launched in 2018 to address youth unemployment while rehabilitating homes for owner-occupants. The program provides hands-on experience in construction and community revitalization projects, helping participants gain practical job skills while improving their neighborhoods.

Through its broader mission, ALT ensures permanent land protection and develops affordable housing opportunities, enabling first-time homebuyers from disinvested areas to achieve homeownership. This effort also helps preserve the social and cultural fabric of communities in West Broad, North Athens, and East Athens, countering trends of gentrification and displacement.

Homebuyers working with ALT not only gain access to affordable, energy-efficient EarthCraft-certified homes, but are also encouraged to become advocates and mentors within their neighborhoods—sharing knowledge and promoting collective action. These homes, designed with comfort, efficiency, and style in mind, are made affordable through careful coordination of federal, state, and local grants and rebates, allowing buyers to purchase quality homes at a fraction of their true cost.

ALT’s work also extends to existing homes, where the organization provides energy-efficiency retrofits and weatherization upgrades. However, during these projects, ALT found that many older homes required extensive repairs—such as roof replacements, structural fixes, or mold and asbestos remediation—beyond what their weatherization budget could cover.

The Drawdown Georgia Climate Solutions & Equity Grant bridged this funding gap by enabling ALT and its contractors to make crucial health and safety repairs before weatherization work. This funding has often made the difference between families keeping their homes or losing them. Typical repairs include fixing flooding issues, rotting beams, holes in roofs and floors, and adding accessibility features like ramps or central HVAC systems where none existed before.

Community Farming in the Heart of Athens
Beyond housing, ALT manages community agriculture initiatives within the city. One example is Williams Farm, a property permanently protected through a conservation easement. When the Williams family ceased farming operations, they entrusted ALT to transform it into a community farm. Managed by ALT staff and supported by the Young Urban Farmers (YUF) program and community volunteers, the farm produced over 9,000 pounds of fresh produce in 2024, benefiting more than 40 food-insecure families identified through local elementary schools.

Looking Ahead
ALT continues to face challenges as development pressures grow around Athens’ legacy neighborhoods. With federal funding expected to tighten, the organization is actively pursuing new funding sources from private foundations, corporations, and individual donors. Given the rising frequency of extreme weather events and the aging housing stock in its service areas, ALT anticipates an increasing need for electrical system upgrades, HVAC installations, and weatherization work to protect residents from heat, storms, and flooding.

The Drawdown Georgia Climate Solutions & Equity Grant was made possible through the support of several philanthropic partners, including The Kendeda Fund, The R. Howard Dobbs, Jr. Foundation and its Dobbs Fund, The Ray C. Anderson Foundation, The Sapelo Foundation, and The Wilbur & Hilda Glenn Family Foundation.

To learn more about the project’s impact, you can read about former U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm’s 2023 visit to the West Broad community, where she met Bennie Tillman, an ALT Community Advisory Board member and long-time resident who benefited from home repairs and upgrades funded through the Drawdown Georgia grant.
